I doubt the story. These people are invested. They understand that running off and starting a new party will render them politically neutered. In today’s world starting a relevant party would take billions. Plus, they would need charismatic, heavy weight candidates. Most of them are old, ugly and dull. Too many of the vital ingredients are missing. If they’re making threats, it’s to establish a negotiating basis for concessions they want. This indicates to me that they have no other leverage.
Could be really funny to watch... Go for it guys... we'd love to see you leave.

When a herd of fat-arsed rinos stampede, just get out of their way. Considering how they have led in the past they will manage to find a cliff.
Supposedly, this is how cave men exterminated the mastodons/mammoths/whatever. Panic them and steer them towards a cliff. The voters they might take with them are of no real use.
