Gas stations from Florida to Virginia have closed their pumps and a state of emergency has been declared by the governor of North Carolina after Colonial Pipeline was forced to shut off the nation's biggest fuel pipeline when it was hacked.
The FBI has confirmed that DarkSide, a Russian hacking outfit made up of ransomware veterans, was responsible for the attack on Colonial Pipeline, which runs from Texas to New Jersey and transports 45 percent of the East Coast's fuel supply.
The 5,500 pipeline shut down five days ago and services are only gradually being restored now. Colonial, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, has not yet said whether it has already paid or is negotiating a ransom with the hackers.
Colonial said it was working to 'substantially' resume operations by the end of this week but reports of gas shortages are already emerging up and down the East Coast as motorists were spotted lining up in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.
Meanwhile, at least 24 other companies across a range of industries were also reportedly affected by the ransomware attack and Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, called for military strikes to kill those involved in an 'act of war' against America.
The pipeline supplies nearly half of all the East Coast's fuel needs, including Atlanta's airport - the world's busiest, by passenger traffic. The pipeline also serves 90 U.S. military installations and 26 oil refineries.

Oil and gas from Canada.
I’m in PA and gas went up by 5 cents today. Price is now about twice what it was one year ago.
News gets around, so there was a gas line at my usual stop today. Not a long line, just longer than I’ve ever seen before. About four cars idling close to the pumps.
Elect incompetent clowns, expect a chaotic circus!
Biden falling down on the job:
I am totally suspicious of the official story. There must be something behind this - state actors. And why the US government isn't reacting, is another mystery.
I am in Australia, and I fear that we will have our turn. There have been a series of major hacks of computer systems - including the weather stations (??? but apparently that has security implications.) Many say that it is China.
The drug cocktail his handlers fill him up with when he has to appear near normal.
Ok I’ll bite! How the hell does a hacked computer affect the flow of gasoline in a pipeline? If the Russians are responsible, as the FIB says they are, why is the United States not demanding that the Russian perps be handed over for execution? I am hearing from relatives that the gas stations are out of gas from South Carolina to northern Ohio? If only 45% of the east coast gasoline is provided by this pipeline how is it that 100% of the gas is no longer available? Something does not smell right with this so called outage....
You've hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head.
The American public are nothing more than "fish in a barrel."
That’s interesting because nothing has changed in NYS and the New England states.
We traveled this weekend and had no trouble finding gas and the prices were not hiked.
I did make sure, though that my tank never went below half. I figured if they did implement rationing, I wanted to keep as full a tank as possible.
Mr mm said that this pipelines are 50 years old and that there’s no reason they can’t be operated manually except that they probably don’t have the manpower.
Apparently it’s also an IT failure on Colonial’s part. They’ve had this happen twice before and never addressed the security flaw that allowed the attacks.
Maybe now with the bad publicity, they will this time.
They could get one of those old fashioned push style mowers.
We bought one several years ago and some lady with her preteen grandkids stopped and watched me mowing and the kids were asking her what I was doing.
“Green” lawn mowing.
Right along with my “green” solar clothes dryer.
Neither of which I do because they are green. Both because of the money they save.
After I bring in my sun and wind dried laundry, I run it through the dryer for about 5 minutes to kill any the bugs, and then fold it.
These “ransom” attacks have been around for awhile now, targeting even small businesses. Seems like by now IT folks would have figured out better security against them.
And by the way, I know of one small business that refused to pay the “ransom.” Their business continued on as normal, no ill effects.
Turn those pipes on manually and get them running again! I hope every business in America will consider having manual operations as a backup, just in case.
Mr mm does engineering consulting and has connections in the energy fields.
He said the security for the power grid is actually very good and he didn’t see any reason the gas and oil, industry couldn’t use much the same thing.
I don’t trust computers for saving important documents. We had a computer crash on us, from a virus,IIRC, and we lost EVERYTHING on it, including all our old emails that were stored on that computer.
Call me old fashioned but give me paper.
I’m a paper person and have receipts filed in a filing cabinet.
“We had a computer crash on us, from a virus,IIRC, and we lost EVERYTHING on it, including all our old emails that were stored on that computer.”
Any particular reason it wasn’t backed up? Same question for the pipeline company.
I totally agree with you. If I could make all computers disappear from the earth, I would! Of course, FR would be greatly missed.
It takes about and hour and half to mow the yard with a riding mower. Would probably take me 2 days with a push mower. And I probably wouldn’t be able to get out of bed on the 2nd day.
Why is there ANY outside access (by way of internet) to the control system?
This is a deliberate attack on part of our national infrastructure and should be treated as an act of war (if state sponsored), or terrorism (if not) and those involved should swiftly be dealt with militarily. If that means dropping a 500 pound JDAM on some snot nosed basement dweller’s residence then so be it.
“The FBI has confirmed that DarkSide, a Russian hacking outfit made up of ransomware veterans, was responsible for the attack on Colonial Pipeline.”
“So in other words someone else is actually responsible.”
My bet is china
“Ok I’ll bite! How the hell does a hacked computer affect the flow of gasoline in a pipeline?”
Because the pumps, valves, meters, flow sensors, etc, etc, etc are all computer controlled.
Apparently it’s also an IT failure on Colonial’s part. They’ve had this happen twice before and never addressed the security flaw that allowed the attacks.

Maybe if they hired Americans instead in Indian H1Bs to set up and administer their network this wouldn’t have been a problem.
