TAMPA, Fla. (AP/WFLA) – Norwegian Cruise Lines is threatening to skip Florida ports because of the governor’s order banning businesses from requiring customers be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Norwegian CEO Frank Del Rio says the executive order from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R-Florida) banning what he called ‘vaccine passports’ conflicts with federal guidelines that would let cruise ships sail in U.S. waters if passengers and crew members are vaccinated.
Legally, lawyers believe that federal law applies and not state law, but I’m not a lawyer. And we hope that this hasn’t become a legal football or a political football. But at the end of the day, cruise ships have motors, propellers and rudders. And God forbid, we can’t operate in the state of Florida for whatever reason, then there are other states that we do operate from. And we can operate from the Caribbean for ships that otherwise would have gone to Florida. We certainly hope it doesn’t come to that.
The very thought of being in a floating petri dish surrounded by cruise zombies with no way to escape scares the hell out of me.
Norovirus doesn't kill people.
Between the two, and I’ve had both, I’d rather have WuFlu.
So I'll put you down in the 'not going to go on a cruise' category.
Norovurus does kill people. Check the CDC.
As for cruising, I’m more a windjammer cruise kinda gal, but if I did ever want to book one of those floating hotels, it won’t be with NCL.
In any case, this isn’t about cruising any more than WuFlu is about public health.
Ultimately business must be put in its place but will it have federal power behind it in the end or dare I say the John Roberts Star Chamber on its side.
I understand your post. My point is that unlike Coke and Delta Airlines, which will be fine either way, if I were running a cruise line, I would probably want everyone vaccinated, regardless of politics.
Look at it this way - if one airline decided that TSA was a bunch of a-holes and said that they were sure that their passengers would NEVER attempt to hijack and therefore no screening was required, would most of their potential customers be more likely or less likely to fly on them? Perhaps more at the outset, but after a couple of planes go down, would that still be the case.
That’s what cruise lines are dealing with.
How’s about we check to see if Woka Cola and Delta are getting a quid pro quo from any governmental entity for being such good team players?
My bet is, unless they’re boards are total idjits, big name companies are getting recompensed by unknowing taxpayers for any losses.
One example: Amazon’s deal with the NFL.
Hows...their...
It won't be Florida that loses revenue, it'll be Norwegian. I'm in a condo overlooking the beach in Fort Walton Beach as I type this and the place is packed, people are flocking to Florida precisely because the mask BS is gone and you can actually have a normal vacation & enjoy yourself. You can sit at a bar and listen to live music while sipping your beer without wearing a mask, signing in on a contact tracing list, or having to sit 10' away from the nearest person.
DeSantis and Florida are right and Norwegian is wrong. We need to stand our ground and say no to Covid terrorism.
I think Ron should make an exception for cruise ships. If any of the un-vaccinated people get covid on the ship and pass it on to other un-vaxed, we’re all stuck at sea for who knows how long.
Go ahead, I don’t give a crap.
We should spend all our tourism money in red states. Why rot on some Norwegian dinghy when you can just spend all week fishing the Ozarks?
It is funded by the Federal government. It is not an NGO.
Pretty much.
We have no obligation to keep arrogant, suicidal Norwegian businesses in business.
Sure they will!
The largest concentration of retirees...
Hey, aren’t they foreign flagged operations anyway?
Isn’t their business in the toilet and they choose to stay in the toilet
Then no one can ever make you cruise.......you’re safe!
But as a Floridian I have taken advantage of the variety of cruise lines and nearby ports and have stayed very well on my cruises
It can be a most relaxing getaway.
Interesting point of view I did not expect to surface on this story. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
When ncl see this concerning NC...”The white conservative Democrats regained control of the state legislature in 1870, in part by Ku Klux Klan violence and terrorism...” they may have to move further north still. Be sweet if AL, MS, LA and TX did the same thing. They can always sail out of Tampico.
“How’s about we check to see if Woka Cola and Delta are getting a quid pro quo from any governmental entity for being such good team players?”
Sorry, but I doubt it. Look at the people at the top. They’re lucky to get 10 minutes of NBC Nightly News each day.
To them, that is the country. An absolute NUTCASE that got ‘elected’ in 2016, only through the efforts of the Russians. This ‘nutcase’, Trump, who now can’t accept the fact that he lost a fair election...now is telling their companies what they need to do - versus a bunch of people who have a CREDIBLE THREAT of violence making life very difficult for both the companies and the FAMILIES of CEOs.
...so they take what seems to be the ‘easy way’ out, and piss off us tiny minority* of their customers, the Trump supporters, and keep the animals at bay (for now).
*45% or more of their customer base
Dear Norwegian Cruise Lines,
Bake the damned cake.
Signed,
Ron DeSantis
Governor of Florida
