I don’t recall what prompted my mother to say this, some time back in the sixties, but it went, “You know, if you don’t want to see something you said on the front page of the paper*, for God’s sake, don’t write it down.”
* She is referencing something called a “newspaper.” It was a thick set of paper pages containing what passed for news, along with sports scores and the kind of articles you’d read on something like Freerepublic.com today.
