Young South Korean men turn against Moon ahead of 2022 election

In April, South Korea held by-elections in the country's two largest cities, with the Democratic Party losing both in landslides. Poll data showed that young people, in particular young men, voted for the right-wing opposition in uncommonly large numbers.

As left-leaning President Moon Jae-in enters his fifth and final year in office, he and his party are grappling with souring public sentiment related to the widespread perception that Moon has not delivered on promises to revive the flagging economy. At the same time, a number of high-ranking officials in his administration have had to step down after being implicated in corruption scandals that have tainted the government's image as crusaders for fairness and transparency.

In the last week of April, Moon's approval rating tumbled to 29%, the lowest recorded since he took office in May 2017, according to pollster Gallup. As reason for their negative assessment of Moon's performance, 28% cited displeasure with the administration's real estate policies, followed by 17% who disapproved of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The shift among young Koreans, particularly males in their twenties, has more to do with anti-Moon sentiment than any strong appeal from the opposition," Andrew Yeo, professor of politics and director of Asian Studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, told Nikkei Asia.

In Korea, a president is allowed to serve only one term...For five years...That’s it.

President Moon is not running for reelection...

Maybe a “conservative” will win Korean presidential election next time...

President Park was removed from office...Then Mr. Moon won in the new election...

President Park is considered as a “conservative”...

That impeachment thing is several years old...I think Korean voters are willing to vote for some conservative candidate for president.

Praying! It was awesome when Trump went to North Korea. But Moon wants unification for all the wrong reasons. He’s practically communist.

And I’m craving Korean food right now too. Ahh!

President Moon is a liberal...I would not go as far as calling him a "communist"...

President Moon served in the Korean army special forces during 1970s...The unit was commanded by Chun Doo-Hwan...By the way, Chun served as the president of Korea during 1980s...

The intelligence word I have from South Koreans is that Moon has since his student days been groomed by China as an intelligence intermediary between North Korea and South Korean pro-North Korea groups, while purposely never assuming any leadership role himself in any of those groups - “keeping his hands clean’. And once in power many of his appointees sure enough have histories in pro-North Korean groups in South Korea.

How did Moon get elected:

About President Moon's military service...

Back in 1970s, military service was mandatory for young men in South Korea...That requirement still exists...

President Moon participated in many anti-government protests back in 1970s...One day, he got a notice to report for military service...He was not given a chance to postpone the service...It was an obvious move by the government to punish him for his protests...

Moon followed the order and reported to an army unit...He eventually volunteered to serve in the special forces...
