One State Will Soon Introduce Firing Squad as Execution Method as it faces a lack of lethal-injection drugs.

Death by firing squad is poised to become an execution method in South Carolina as the state faces a lack of lethal-injection drugs.

The state House passed a bill Wednesday, 66-43, approving the use of firing squads, two months after the state Senate approved the measure, 32-11.

Condemned inmates will be able to choose between electrocution or firing squad if lethal injection drugs are unavailable.

South Carolina can’t put anyone to death now because its supply of lethal-injection drugs expired and it has not been able to buy any more. Currently, inmates can choose between the electric chair and lethal injection. Since the drugs are not available, they choose injection.

The bill retains lethal injection as the primary method of execution if the state has the drugs, but requires prison officials to use the electric chair or firing squad if it doesn't. (ABC News)

Republican Gov. Henry McMaster indicated he will sign the bill when it reaches his desk.

The last time South Carolina executed a death row inmate was 10 years ago this week.

“Those families of victims to these capital crimes are unable to get any closure because we are caught in this limbo stage where every potential appeal has been exhausted and the legally imposed sentences cannot be carried out," said Republican Rep. Weston Newton.

Nah.

Twenty ton millstones. Crush them then grind the corpse to a pulp. Do not immediately clean it of blood and gore. Let it get ripe. Carve the executed persons names, dates, and offenses into the exterior circumference of the stone.

Periodically, send it on tour to every jail and courthouse in the state to educate the public as to what ultimately awaits them if crime seduces them.

As I understand it, they used the firing squad so that no one person would know if his was the lethal shot.

Better than injecting a sleepy drug then a killer drug, a process which makes it appear as if the condemned is sleeping peacefully but doesn’t wake up.

Face the reality of what you are doing. You are killing a person. No need to hide it behind feely-good phrases and slumber-like circumstances.

The firing squad works. There is no doubt as to what is happening.

That being said, I don’t want any government to have the power to kill anyone. Governments are run by people and some (many) use their positions for person gain. Some prosecutors send people to their deaths on flimsy evidence so as to get the numbers up there. Some death sentences are political in nature.

I can understand why doctors would not want to participate in a lethal injection.

I remember when most doctors wouldn’t perform abortions.

Killing violates the Hippocratic Oath.

Exactly. We are killing a human being. That is not something to be taken lightly.

I am very pro-life (and my two children, 25 and 22, both know that. I have said to them that if a pregnancy happens, that they should come to their father and me. I said We will help you!).

However I am less enthusiastic about the death penalty. There are many cases where people were unfairly convicted.

Gee, can’t an independent lab make the drugs? Why not a massive overdose of fentanyl followed by carbon monoxide?

People that face the death penalty....generally KILLED SOMEONE.

Kill someone...and it's cut and dry. Hang until dead.

Can't understand why anyone doesn't get that.

This one would do it. You'd want to make sure the prisoner isn't wearing a bulletproof vest, though.

Back in the 1970s, they outlawed the practice so those who had X number of years on death row were let out of prison. Many immediately went out and murdered more people.

Accchhh. Let’s don’t do THAT again!!

Once again...

Though a firing squad might be emotionally satisfying, all crap like this does is muddy the issues. Same with electrocution, and most other methods. All you need to perform an execution is an air-tight room with room for a gurney, so the criminal can be strapped down. Pump in pure nitrogen while evacuating the air from the room. Once you’re at about a 99% nitrogen atmosphere, the condemned is going to die within just a few minutes.

Set a timer, and when it dings at the 15 minute mark, you pump normal air into the room and dump the nitrogen outside. This is easy, simple, cheap, and there are no poisons, or other crap that can get in the way. The condemned will be dead and probably won’t have any idea when it happened.

If the state is going to execute people, just freaking do it without all the circus crap that currently clouds the issues.

What about putting them to sleep (for quickness) and finishing the job with carbon monoxide?

“How ‘bout the Guillotine? A lot quieter!”

It would definitely put an abrupt halt to any hollering.
