New York Gov. Cuomo signs bill that automatically restores felons right to vote after release

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill expanding felon voting rights on Tuesday, according to the state legislature, allowing for people on parole in the state to be eligible to vote as soon as they leave prison.

The law codifies a 2018 executive order that allowed for Cuomo to individually pardon parolees. According to the bill text, Department of Corrections officials are required to provide a voter registration form as the felon is leaving the facility. Previously, parolees would have to wait a period of four to six weeks to receive a pardon and then must register to vote on their own.

The law goes into effect immediately, although some portions are delayed until 120 days after its signing, according to the bill text. The New York legislature passed the bill in April.

Now do gun rights.

Gun rights are guaranteed in the Constitution (”shall not be infringed.”)
Voting was restricted in the Constitution.

Does New York not have a process for rehabilitation of convicted felons?

Unless and until the felon is rehabilitated he or she remains an person of moral turpitude and unfit to exercise the franchise to vote.

At the same time they erect enormous barriers to recall a corrupt politician, demanding to show proof of ID to sign a petition.

Don’t panic.
Thanks to NYC, New York state is lost to us anyway.
The time to panic is when a Red or Purple state does this, or when the Federales decide to make this nation wide.

On the downside, though, there is no guarantee that NY ex-cons will stay in NY...

What if the felon were a right-wing political prisoner? What if he were Trump? Can’t let them go out and vote again.

This should happen only after they have repaid their Debt to Society! And that includes all costs pursuant to their arrest - all court costs: paperwork, housing costs, jury compensation, salaries for judges, bailiffs, guards, maintenance of Courthouse, jail and prison facilities and their respective costs.) also all injuries they inflicted on their victims - restoration of all damaged or stolen property, all medical costs for their victims and themselves, and in the event of permanent injury, a monthly payment to the victims as assessed by the court for the lifetime of the victim. In the event of murder, the forfeiture of all wages the victim would have earned if they would have lived. When all these costs have been repaid, and ONLY THEN should a criminal who has done damage to society have the right to influence said society. If this doesn’t suit the criminal Too Bad!
