Britain’s royal family is likely in its “end game” — and will probably not “outlast” Prince William’s eventual reign as king, according to an award-winning UK author and dame.
“I think it’s the end game. I don’t know how much longer the institution will go on,” Dame Hilary Mantel told the Telegraph.
“I’m not sure if it will outlast William. So I think it will be their last big era,” predicted the “Wolf Hall” author, who was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006 and then made a dame by Prince Charles in 2014. Mantel wondered if Queen Elizabeth II was now “the only person who really believes in the monarchy.”
“I wish the Queen had felt able to abdicate … I understand that she thinks of this as a sacred task, from which you simply cannot abdicate, whereas the rest of us think of it as a job, from which you should be able to retire,” the author said.

While I don’t accept the concept of monarchy, I think the Queen is good for England. She is a symbol of stability, and harkens back to when England was great. When she retires, one of those jerks will become king, and the dignity and grace will be gone.
I look at the British royalty and its extended nobility as just useless upper-class welfare recipients that stunt that nations ability to be great.
MEghan lied about the prince title. Harry knows the rule but he’s so whipped that he crawled up behind MEghan’s lie.
Traditionally, the prince title would have gone as far out as William’s first born son but Elizabeth granted the rest of his kids to be princes and princesses. She didn’t do the same for Harry’s kids as they’re obviously farther down the line of succession. Of course, the msm and Americans use it and the princess title willy nilly as they wish. Titles make for great headline$.

It’s also a national security nightmare for the UK.
Wallis was having second thoughts and wanted to get out of marring Edward but she’d taken her little scheme to make her husband jealous too far. She wrote love letters to Earl Simpson the rest of her life.
Not that I care one way or the other, but it has seemed to me for a while now that the British monarchy won’t last too much longer after Queen Elizabeth passes.
Why? Did they run out of cousins to boink?
All because Meghan Markle gave an interview to Oprah?
Whatever the Monarchy lacks, William strikes me as the man to fix it and build it back up.
He isn’t taking any $hit from Harry Markle it’s worth noting.
Yes but the damage was already done. She was stuck with Edward and the dogs.
No. But fortunately William married an attractive commoner from a loving family. Good genes. She has given him a beautiful family. Lucky man. He wanted the same for Harry, but Harry would not listen. When the couple stayed with them, Kate thought it very odd Harry had not met Thomas.
Charles could grant it when he becomes king.
Between Meghan Markle and the soon to be King Charles the Brits will be sick of the monarchy.
The Royal Family provides many of the services that Americans assign to the State Department, the Pentagon, and various other Cabinet posts. The Queen or King is the Head of the Armed Forces, as well as being the Defemders of the Faith (Church of England). The Royal family have top military ranks and are the chief internal and external diplomats for the UK and the Commonwealth of 149 nations, and also have a role in influencing society with an eye to longevity of key social institutions such as the family, education, historic preservation, hundreds of charities and foundations, and recognition of outstanding efforts by their "subjects". Although they are not supposed to meddle in Parilamenatary politcal operations, the Sovereign does receive a "red box" of papers from the Prime Minister daily, and meets with the PM weekly to discuss policy and leadership issues.
I believe the Dame is wrong in her dire prediction, barring a communist incursion by a foreign nation. Our nation's degradation of its once-innovative system is a grim example of what can go wrong when a Republic is corrupted. Having Royals is a great source of cultural stability for them.
I agree; and Catherine is also truly excellent in her role.
Parilamenatary = Parliamentary. /sp
The monarchy will last until an absolute horror show like Prince Andrew ends up heir to the throne. As long as Prince George turns out OK, the monarchy won’t die in our lifetime.
I suppose it is only a matter of time before an heir is born who is an absolute womble and ends up destroying the monarchy. There are plenty of examples in history of thorougly unlikeable monarchs.
