True. He clearly got COVID-19 from being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. And that exposure needed to consist of a large enough viral load that his immune system was unable to successfully fight it off. For whatever reason, the vaccinations in his case did not trigger his body to build up substantial immunity.
