A bill recently passed by the Florida legislature would assess fines as high as $250,000 against social media companies that ban political candidates from their platforms.
The bill — widely seen as a rebuke to tech companies that blacklisted then-President Donald Trump from their servers in the waning days of his administration this year — was passed earlier this week by the Florida House and Senate. It is expected to be signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The legislation directs that social media platforms "may not willfully deplatform a candidate for office who is known by the social media platform to be a candidate, beginning on the date of qualification and ending on the date of the election or the date the candidate ceases to be a candidate."

Utterly unenforcable.
Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one.
At least an attempt to stay within the limitations of playing by the rules. I wrote that off a long time ago. The other side does NOT limit itself.
These internet forums are public places. If racial discrimination laws can prevent public places from presenting bias on behalf of the community then speech discrimination laws can do the same thing.

SCOTUS are in hiding in the fetal position when it comes to opining in favor of US Constitution.
At least their is an attempt to regulate tech giants that control a lot of politicians but I doubt anything will come from this. Since I stopped using twitter anyway I really don’t care what they do.
Yes, and this would affect more than just the giants.
If a candidate for any office in Florida gets zotted, FR would be on the hook for $250K per day.
Actually there are federal laws against in-kind contributions to candidates by corporations. But since this tactic is used against Republicans, they’re not enforced.
What SHOULD be required, but won’t be, is that the companies either pull all declared candidates for a race off their platform, or none of them.
The 9th Circuit will step in ....3...2...1
So if Jim zots Ilhan Omar he'll have to do non-stop Freepathons just to pay the fines.
Trump just might provide zero taxes for all Florida citizens as the State rakes in tens of billions of dollars in fines just from his bans alone. Lol
DeSantis will keep trying things until something works or big Tech gives up.
Fines won’t work. Deplatform the tech companies. Block them from all state networks to start. Universities, state facilities, etc.
I’m no Constitutional scholar but it’s easy for me to imagine this being struck down in the Federal courts.
It’s also easy for me to see useful idiots on the right continuing to sell rope to the fascist Big Techsters who are trying to hang them with it.
Ilhan Omar should be allowed to post here. That would be great fun, like sending a cat into a bunch of hungry rabid pitbulls.

Please point to words or deeds from Freep management which put Free Republic out as a public place for people to gather. It is not, and Freep management has made no claims that even hint that it is.
Private clubs are free to discriminate on the basis of race or speech.
Like Laura Loomer was.
The bill says nothing about it needing to be a public place. Here is the bill’s definition of social media platform:
“’Social media platform’ means any information service,
system, Internet search engine, or access software provider that: Provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server, including an Internet platform or a social media site; “
