Ahh, link to a paywall. Always a good idea. As regards the military, just like in America the French opted out of conscription in 1996 and are now paying the demographic price in their ranks. Don't think for a second there are not plenty of French whose patriotism became pronounced as they lived beyond military age. Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark among others have taken the wiser route.
