Ahh, link to a paywall. Always a good idea. As regards the military, just like in America the French opted out of conscription in 1996 and are now paying the demographic price in their ranks. Don't think for a second there are not plenty of French whose patriotism became pronounced as they lived beyond military age. Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark among others have taken the wiser route.

Can you imagine the uproar if a similar letter was published in Wall Street Journal or NY Times and was authenticated by the signers of the letter who stood up and accepted their responsibility in writing the letter....

It would be full on Armageddon in the liberal press, the signers of the letter would be already rounded up and jailed without bail for who knows how long...
