Canada lacks the miracle that is the United States Constitution. Still, as befits a nation the once-free British founded, it is a country that has traditionally had a few of what we consider to be core English freedoms — freedom of speech, worship, assembly, etc. Those concepts seem far away now, as Justin Trudeau and the various provincial and municipal governments use COVID as an excuse to crack down on those liberties.
I've written before about Canada's draconian and expensive hotel rule for people returning by air from overseas travel. It's gotten so bad that people are flying into the U.S. and driving to their home country to avoid the hotel restriction.
That inconvenience, though, is small potatoes compared to what else is going on in a country that, as of April 30, has had an average of only 653 COVID deaths per million citizens. By contrast, France had 1,530 deaths per million, Germany has had 997 deaths per million, England has had 1,903 deaths per million, and America has had 1,744 deaths per million.
In other words, as the vaccine ramps up, treatments improve, and we get better at protecting the at-risk elderly, Canada should be relaxing its restrictions — but that's not what's happening. Two men, however, are fighting back.
One of those people is already familiar to American Thinker readers. A month ago, American Thinker posted a video of Pastor Artur Pawlowski, who grew up in communist Poland, kicking the Canadian police out of his church. They had come to stop a worship service that exceeded the 15% capacity limit Canada imposes on religious worship. (As a thought experiment, ask yourself if the government would do the same to a mosque.)

As an ex-canuck, I can personally say my mom will have to do this. Stuck in a certain foreign country overseas for a YEAR (yes, canada allowed it for citizens that were caught outside of the country since May last year).
Plus, it ALWAYS has been a police state. Too tired to type how much crap I took from the RCMP esp. when flying in and out.
So does the USA I’m afraid.
Canada is that weird cousin in your family everyone stays away from. Suddenly you’re reading about him in the newspaper.
>> Lately?
Damn you!!!
RE: I think we may have them beat.
We have the first and tenth amendments in our constitution, they don’t.

We have the first and tenth amendments in our constitution, they don’t.
Wish I could disagree
LL, ping to this story.
Well okay, there is the First Amendment, but how free do you feel to say exactly what you’re thinking about every subject? I’m in Canada, what the author says is true enough but the situation in both our countries is essentially the same, we are being gradually taken over by globalist dictatorships serving partially hidden interests (and not that hidden really), and we don’t feel totally free to say everything that we might wish to say, not only for legal reasons, but equally important, for social reasons. I am rather outspoken and probably fit right into the “crazy uncle” stereotype, and I don’t care much about who is offended, but I would never imagine that my protests are having any actual effect on anyone, outside of certain communities of share interests like this one.
So how free does that make our speech? Not very, I think part of free speech is that ideas compete with each other on their merits and the best ones win and guide the society forward. Is that happening in either of our countries today? I don’t think so.
“We have the first and tenth amendments in our constitution, they don’t.”
Paraphrasing ruler Pelosi: “What does the Constitution have to do with it ?”
We no longer have a government or judiciary that abides by the constitution or laws.
You are absolutely right.
If anyone cares to test just how “free” their speech laws are, have a Bible believing person or persons preach on the sin of homosexuality in the public square.
They’ll be arrested faster than any criminal ever was.
And the UK.
One of BoJo’s guys just announced muzzles won’t be going away anytime soon.
Rep. Higgins pressuring U.S. officials to take action to reopen U.S.-Canada border
Depending on who you are, however, the border isn't really closed.
Thank you for the ping. It’s truly as bad as you’re hearing.
What few realize is that every position in our judiciary is an APPOINTED one. We don’t vote for judges at any level up here, so who knows how corrupted the courts are now. If the people who hold these positions are all compromised and beholden to their appointers, we are truly doomed. I’ve been telling everyone I know for a year now what the agenda is and how we must attend rallies and protests but nobody will listen. The Reverend and Chris Sky are vocal opponents of the tyranny but, as you can see, they’re being arrested and silenced.
