Former President Donald Trump said Thursday he’s optimistic that Republicans will retake the House and Senate in 2022, but called for new leadership to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“We need good leadership,” Trump said in an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo. “Mitch McConnell has not done a great job, I think they should change Mitch McConnell.”
Trump and the longtime Kentucky Republican have had a war of words for some months, and it heated up after the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, when McConnell denounced Trump as having incited the incident.
“The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm,” Trump said in a statement shortly after McConnell’s Senate floor comments. “Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again.”
Trump also became angry at McConnell after the then-Senate Majority Leader refused to take any action to contest the results of the 2020 election, and he has suggested he’ll work to defeat McConnell and “back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great.”
McConnell at the time argued that contesting the vote because of objections from the losing side would see American democracy enter “a death spiral.”
“I’m looking at the right people to endorse and when I endorse people it means a lot,” Trump told Bartiromo on Thursday. “I think we’re going to have a great victory in 2022. I think we’re going to take back the House. Everybody’s working very hard.”

PRESIDENT Trump is much kinder than I am.
He didn’t even refer to mitch as “The Turtle”! LOL.
A True Gentleman.
NO!... we need republicans instead of RINOS in office who WILL provide better leadership!
Has it not been made CRYSTAL CLEAR that over 90% of republicans in Congress and Senate are RINOS???????
“McConnell at the time argued that contesting the vote because of objections from the losing side would see American democracy enter “a death spiral.””
The Constitution directly prescribes ways an election can be contested by the losing side. McConnell is a corrupt, lying, bought off political hack.
How true. Mitch is about as useful as day old dish water.
He has to stop endorsing Bush League Republicans.
Micro Rubio is still a committed Assistant Democrat who can’t wait to give amnesty to illegal aliens and a permanent majority to Democrats.
The House has allowed Cheney to keep her leadership position.
That should tell ALL the current state of the House GOP.
Mumbles McConnell
Senate is much different than the House. Six-Year terms, very difficult to turn over quickly.
But a strong MAGA House will put pressure on the Senate.
McConnell and the rest of the Assistant Democrats assisted in the Big Steal, so of course he wants no objections to it.
BOTH parties colluded to cheat Trump out because he was securing the border and stopping the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).
Not a good excuse for endorsing people who have made a career out of doing the opposite of MAGA.
Rubio still wants to make America North Mexico, not great again.
But if Trump can box Rubio in, and make him distance from that, that’s a win.
McConnell made his bed so screw him. He announced he is retiring but the state legislature needs to change the law for his replacement
Mitch McComical is just part of the DC Swamp that Trump tried to eliminate but couldn’t. Now that the RINOs in
Congre$$ have help oust him they are scared that the Democrats will not allow them to regain power like they use to do.
Let us not forget that the Leadership of BOTH Parties were deeply involved in the Russia Scam as well as the Big Steal.
Yes... too bad the elections system has now been rendered meaningless.
States will be forced to abolish the fed, or this republic is done.
Mitch blew it, he thought he was the most powerful and influential Republican - his title went to his head and made a career ending mistake(s).
Don't pick out a pet issue and tell me "why not", tell me who is a BETTER pick.
What happened to the rumors that Mitch was going to retire early, before his term is up?
He is however, very useful to the fortunes of his wife’s Chinese family.
