The Department of Homeland Security has pushed back the Real ID deadline until 2023.
Originally, air travelers were going to need to have a Real ID by October 1, 2020, in order to board a domestic flight. Last year, the Trump Administration bumped that deadline out a year to October 1, 2021. Now, it’s been bumped out all the way until May 3, 2023...

Divorced and remarried women affected the most by the amount of paperwork they have to produce for the DMV to prove they are who they are after namechanges.
So, IDs are important?
I needed a couple extra pieces of ID when I got the Real ID version of my driver's license a couple years ago. This isn't that difficult of program, but there is nothing the government can't screw up.
Ah, 2023.
O.K.
It only been 13 years. 2008 was first date for implementation. Why the hurry? Lol.
Just get it done, tired of excuses delaying people prove they are citizens.
I am postponing my Bucket List trip to Prague, Paris and Palma de Mallorca until my mood changes.
So I don’t really need one of those nifty new ID badges.
Also subversives of all stripes living under assumed personages
IDs are racist
Screw that. Passport is the only way to go
The American government does very little right. 9/11 is turning into more of a long term problem than the attack itself. America is being shredded.
Couple more elections to do first.
Yes, this real ID requirement was conceived as a result of 9.11.
I never understood the need for it, because as foreign nationals, Mohammed Atta and his boys would not have needed an American driver’s license as an ID. They would have had their passports from their home country.
And anyway, as I recall, we weren’t required to show an ID to get on a plane until 1996. I don’t recall the justification used for that new requirement.
Anyway, isn’t it stunning that it takes decades to implement something which was recommended as a result of Sept 11 2001??? We won World War 2 in less than four years after Pearl Harbor.
Who’s gonna pay the fee to get this fancy new ID?
But if you’re traveling internationally I think your passport will do.
What is the problem with the small additional fee (shame on states for doing this) and the action of proving you are really a US citizen? I think the latter should be enough to get any conservative on board to get the Real ID and encourage everyone to get it. Wonder if businesses can refuse to accept a non-Real ID?
Thanks
Most states already met the Real ID requirement as of last year. Guess what states didn’t.
There’s absolutely no reason why
I have to prove I’m an American
citizen, especially since I’ve
been driving legally since 1968,
and have renewed my license every
four years since. THEY KNOW
I’M A CITIZEN. I vote, cash a
check, enter a bar, offer ID
for a traffic stop, using the
same form of ID that’s been
required since drivers’ licenses
have been issued. This fiasco
started when some states decided
that it was no problem issuing
drivers’ licenses to illegal
wet back border jumpers.
When you apply for, or renew,
you don’t need a “REAL ID”
unless you board airplanes, or
enter a federal courthouse.
(neither of which I plan on doing).
I’m not going to jump thru their
hoops.
In my state, the papers needed are no different from what it takes to initially get a drivers license or even to vote. If your last name is different from the one on your birth certificate, then you have to show the paperwork trail. I had to do the same to vote.
Because I was already an established driver’s licrnce holder in my state, all I had to bring was my old license, 2 proofs of address and my birth cert. I had already provided the rest. And this time around I even got a discount due to my age.
