Yikes! You’re right. I was taking your comment about the pill costing much more literally... my bad. Both will be subsidized by taxpayers... but we’re probably paying more for the ‘free’ shots. Lots more.

A cure for some colds. Colds are just a group of symptoms caused by several different viruses. Coronaviruses are thought to cause about 20% of colds. Most are caused by Rhinovirus, RSV and others. There are studies showing Rhinovirus and RSV can be stopped by different protease inhibitors, so it might be possible for a "PI Cocktail" that cures most common colds. But common colds aside, a cure for the next SARS, MERS, or Chinese bat virus would be pretty good.
You were right the first time. Targeted protease inhibitors can be expensive.
While 100% paid for by our taxes, the vaccines were contracted in batches of 100M, and are about as cheap as it gets at $10/dose. Whoever ends up paying for it, I’m sure this drug will be much more expensive than that if approved.
