The Census Bureau is expected to roll out Californiaโs latest official headcount soon, and the Golden State could lose a congressional seat for the first time in its history due to a steep decline in population growth.
Over the past decade, the annual population growth rate has slipped to 0.06%, lower than at any time since at least 1900. California would drop from 53 to 52 House seats - still more than any other state - and would in turn lose electoral votes in the presidential election.
Meanwhile, states like Texas and Florida are growing their populations and political clout. Texas is expected to gain as many as three seats, according to an Election Data Services analysis, and Florida two. Arizona and Colorado could also gain seats.
If California manages to hold onto all 53 House seats, it could be thanks to the work of the $200 million state leaders spent on census outreach, trying to count as many residents as possible to qualify for a proportional amount of federal funding.
California's fleeing residents often cite A skyrocketing cost of living, high taxes and sprawling wildfires as their motivation to move.
But recently, some residents have become fed up with Gov. Gavin Newsom's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and persistent school closures. Newsom is facing an all-but-certain recall race, likely in the fall.
California is the only western state expected to lose a House seat, according to an Election Data Services projection obtained by Mercury News. Nine other states stand to lose a seat, mostly in the northeast and midwest.

5 more ev’s the GOP candidate.
My gut says Illinois stands to lose a seat, along with several New England/north east states.
Electoral College tilts more GOP.
MT may get one.
AL and WV may lose one.
For every Citizen who leaves CA, there are three ILLEGAL INVADERS replacing them. The Census counts EVERYONE.
I would think New York and Illinois will lose seats...as well as Minnesota.
My three word response?
“Tee Hee & Hee!”
If all illegal aliens would be removed from the count, plus everyone that has left the state, they’d lose more than one.
Keep that border wide open! Step right in, amigos! We need to count you, in our census. Oh...and, can you drive to AZ, for us, to place some extra mail in ballots, in the ballot box, again?
Agree.
53 seats in California. 42 of them infested with a RAT. That gives the RATs a 31 seat advantage from this state alone. More than enough to swing the House over to their side. If California had honest elections it would be a long time before the RATs ever controled the House again.
IL had better lose at least one. We’ve had so many people flee; my husband and I are preparing to exit the state ourselves.
One can only hope, because CA losing a seat would help create some momentum.
If DC and PR become states and the total number of representatives remains at 435, then two states will lose representation to compensate.

NJ is losing a pair of voters in 51 days. Florida will be gaining two voters in 52 days. Can't wait for my jexit (Jersey Exit).
Don’t worry. Some Federal judge will stop it. They may even add 10 or 100 more.
AL is becoming a Blue State anyway. I know— I live here. Communism everywhere in Huntsville, Birmingham, Montomgery and Mobile.
I suspect CT will equal out as plenty of people left, but also had a influx of people form NYC move in.
