California will stop issuing new permits for hydraulic fracking by January 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Friday.
The Democrat governor also instructed the California Air Resources Board to research how to phase out oil extraction by 2045 in the Golden State.
The move is regarded mostly as symbolic as California Department of Conservation records show fracking accounts for only 2 percent of oil extraction in the state.
“The climate crisis is real, and we continue to see the signs every day,” Newsom said in a statement.
“I’ve made it clear I don’t see a role for fracking in that future and, similarly, believe that California needs to move beyond oil,” he pledged.
Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a method of extracting oil and gas from parts of the earth’s crust inaccessible by conventional drilling methods. It became a hot topic in the 2020 presidential election because it plays a crucial role in the energy industry of Pennsylvania, a swing state.
Newsom seems to have changed his tactics after a push to ban fracking in the state legislature failed.
He told reporters back in September 2020 that only the legislature can ban fracking because the state government doesn’t have the authority to do it.
“We simply don’t have that authority. That’s why we need the Legislature to approve it,” Newsom said at the time.
However, the efforts to push the fracking ban via legislature failed. State Democrats didn’t get enough votes to get Senate Bill 467—which was intended to ban fracking in California—out of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.
Environmentalist organizations including the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Sierra Club applaud California’s move.
However, an oil producers trade association said the executive move is “disappointing,” will undermine the energy industry in California,

What will Governor Caitlin do?
So Author trying to make a story where there is none.
But there is plenty of oil in California. It means that future development will die before it even begins.
The article goes on to mention that CA wants to end oil extraction "entirely", not just by fracking.
ok
Sorry, there is NO climate crisis. It’s all leftist propaganda.
Well, perhaps the horizontal fracking technology will advance to the point where all the States around Kalifornia can just Drill Baby Drill! I remember Obambi and company stating the impossibility of drilling our way to energy independence, and then, with Trump, we did!
California does have some plays where horizontal fracing can be utilized. At the right oil price, they would be commercial.
The earth is laughing at the leftists mob.
Where? Near Streisand's beachfront mansion which has eight chimneys? And why wait 24 years to do anything about it?
So when it all blows up in their faces, they won’t be around to get all the blowback.
I am working on putting together the units and land ownership for a new Haynesville shale well to be drilled by a client of mine in East Texas - Gavin Newsome and wife are royalty owners.
More unemployment coming to California. Way to go Dems, the “Party” of the “workers”. More like the Communist Party using the “workers” to impose a “workers paradise” where everyone is poor except the reds and the Hollywood/Silicon Valley elites (don’t bother to come to our neighborhoods. We have private police with guns).
I worked many years helping to clean up superfund toxic waste sites in California. I wish could be as successful in cleaning up the ‘Marxist toxic shitholes of California politics”.
Then everyone would have had a much better economic life.
This is a good thing. It means the oil will still be in the ground for whatever civilization replaces this one.
California’s energy consumption is sustained today by imported energy due to its leftist policies which restrict development of generating capacity. Cut off its electricity imports from neighboring states and California collapses.
Fast forward 10-15 years to a world where California has banned the internal cumustion engine, as well as use of hydrocarbons to generate electricity or fuel vehicles. All vehicles are electric powered. California is importing even more electric power than today because solar, wind and hydroelectric won’t meet the demand. By then the environmentalists will have banned solar farms in the desert because they cover the land and disrupt the desert ecosystem.
The federal government has made it impossible in neighboring states to build new nuclear or fossil fuel generating capacity. California’s neighboring states ultimately stop exporting electricity to California in order to meet their own growing needs for electricity due to population growth and federally mandated replacement of fossil fueled vehicles with electric powered vehicles.
California is already experiencing periodic brownouts and blackouts. Imagine a California where electric consumption in each household is controlled through smart meters to a government mandated daily amount which is perhaps 50% of what the average household consumes today. What happens when even with draconian rationing brownouts and blackouts are frequent and unpredictable?
Imagine the third or fourth day of a blackout in LA during a particularly hot, dry summer when there is no air conditioning, no power for the refrigerator, no electricity to recharge the electric vehicle, retail businesses including grocery stores are closed, hospitals are closed, ATM machines won’t work, and there is no water because the pumps used to supply the city have no power. With no television to watch, no internet service, no food, no water, no transportation, and the smartphone dead, what will millions of people do and how will the Democrat governor at the time react as the city burns? Will the progressive politician display compassion and understanding?
