“Biden made the right move here.”

Stopped clocks, and all that.

I’m surprised he didn’t try to blame the Armenian genocide on white supremacy in the United States.

Turkey is NOT our friend.

In any case, US has an air base in Turkey...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incirlik_Air_Base

Would Turkey tell US to leave the air base because of what Mr. Biden just did?

No president since WWI has done it. Partly i think because it leaves the US open for criticism as someone implied above, and partly because it was seen as a part of the horror of the war. Just my $.02.

But i absolutely agree that now is the right time to acknowledge the genocide. It’s only revolting because it’s slow joe that did it.

I am part native American. The narrative that the American Indian was a peaceful and benevolent peoples is not accurate. When the settlers came and Americans expanded Westward there were tribes that were agriculture based who tried to get along with others, but even they had a bloody history and engaged in slavery. The more nomadic tribes were anything but peaceful with war and slavery as common practice.

Both sides did things that we regret now. Both. History has been very distorted and the premise that is taught today in our schools that “they were here first” and had somehow lived peacefully on the land before the appearance of Europeans for a long time is NOT supported by evidence.

You would be hard pressed to find any peoples who did not engage in behavior with other tribes that we view as abhorrent today. I wish this was something that more Americans understood. We are NOT responsible for the sins of our predecessors. American academia is hellbent on applying the sins of the past onto the present.

What happened in Armenia was genocide. It should be labeled as such. However, none of the participants of it are alive today and it is beyond our ability to fix. Turkey will continue to deny it or justify it, but in the end what are we supposed to do about it? The injustices in that part of the world are legion and continued through WWII and beyond. We were not alive.

The airbase in Turkey is of strategic importance, but Turkey is not our friend nor are they a force for stability and peace in the region.

They have their own interests and we have ours. If those no longer coincide, so be it.

It may actually be a good idea to leave incirlic and push Turkey out of NATO.

Perhaps Biden got instructions from his CCP bosses to distract from that CCP treatment of Uigurs are being questioned by their relatives in Turkey of what is happening in the area where Turkmen (Uigurs) live who are racially different

At the beginning of the first Iraq war Erdogan refused to allow jets from said air base from engaging from his little fiefdom which caused American deaths.

I’m still wondering what this is meant to distract people’s attention from.

America needed Turkey as a transshipment point for the war in Afghanistan and a possible staging area for war in Iran (which was the original Rusfeldian goal for war with Iraq). The forever war neocons and establishment types kept Turkey appeased as Erdogan continued to mock the US and trample the rights of its citizens. The Biden administration has no real appetite for war in either Afghanistan or Iran, and they could use an empty diplomatic victory to point to while distracting people from what's going on in China. If it makes war with Iran more difficult later in case a subsequent administration gets the appetite, all the better.

That said, Blinkin and Biden are doing a good thing that Trump and Pompeo should have done years ago. They may do a lot I disagree with, but this is one thing I'm fully behind, even if it's probably for the wrong reasons.

This should have been done years ago, by Trump and by others before him. Credit to Biden for finally recognizing the Armenian genocide.

Biden doesn’t need Turkey on our side. What the hell, it is merely the centuries old buffer between Islam and Europe. And the speed bump keeping Russia from flowing into the Med

Sure, let’s make a big deal out of something that happened a hundred years ago. This is the kind of think that will lead to reparations for slave holding.

He just can’t stop aggravating our allies and poking our enemies.

Ain’t no fool like an old fool.
