The birth family of the Ohio teenage girl who was shot by police outside her foster home Tuesday is mulling a lawsuit, according to a report.
Ma’Khia Bryant, 16, was shot dead after calling police for help when two woman started fighting with her outside the Columbus home, her cousin Deja Torrence told Insider.
Police opened fire as she lunged at one of the women with a knife, according to dramatic footage released by police.
Nicholas Reardon, the officer who killed Bryant, has been assigned to desk duty while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation looks into the shooting, the report said.
Torrence said her cousin was failed by the foster system, and her mother and Bryant’s biological mother are talking to a lawyer about pursuing unspecified legal action, according to the outlet.
“Someone has to be held accountable,” Torrence told Insider. “The family just doesn’t want this to be another senseless killing that goes under the rug and gets overlooked.”
Torrence reportedly said that Bryant was not a violent person, and must have believed her life was in danger. She told Insider that her family had talked to the teen about walking away from conflicts.
“We’re talking about a kid. She’s a kid. She’s 16 defending herself from 20-something-year-olds,” Torrence, 29, told the outlet.

“If I felt threatened, if I felt that a group of individuals was coming on my property where I lived to fight me, I would get whatever I needed to protect myself.”

why’s she in foster care if she has these great parents?
Exactly the reason we need to install loser pays in all civil actions.
“The family just doesn’t want this to be another senseless killing that goes under the rug and gets overlooked.”
Well, I’m all for complete investigations of incidents. However, it does appear this was not “another senseless killing”, but rather, a good shot by police to save lives.
By using words such as “senseless killing” right off the bat, these people have already done a rush to judgement.
Let’s have that investigation.
Where this is eventually leading will be.......
If it’s black on black crime, STAY OUT OF IT. Even if it means one of them
ends up dead.
lil feral had a knife. BLM booger thought cops were gonna back down due to imaginary woke rules, now she burns in hell.
We aren’t allowed to ask such questions.
It won’t be worth $27 million like St. Floyd, but promise Crump or Sharpton a cut, and there could be a couple $million in it.
And that will be racist too. White cops stand by and let black people die. You cannot win with these people.
That “child” was not defending itself. It was on the attack. I don’t know the circumstances, but a look at the video shows the girl on the attack.
Will they need to surpass the $27 million that went to gf’s kin folks? Better query benny crump make sure there’s equity.
Even with how obviously justified this shooting was, who here doubts
in todays racial atmosphere that this family will STILL get paid?
So, NOW her Black Life Matters.
The girl whose life was saved should sue the estate, and have a constructive trust place on any potential settlement (because that is where this is headed).
If the loser can't pay, then the loser's lawyer should pay. I bet a parade of lawyers courted the parents to file a civil law suit. They probably offered to do it for "free", meaning the parents pay nothing. However, the lawyers get a cut of the settlement.
How did these great parents let things got so far out of hand now the lawyers have a case.
“If it’s black on black crime, STAY OUT OF IT. Even if it means one of them ends up dead.”
yes sir.
I have been saying that for more than a few years now
With any luck, the intended victim of Little Big Miss Stabby McStabface will countersue this lovely, “Family,” into oblivion.
