Newsweak 6/19/18: “The Army officially kicked out a West Point graduate who made waves last year after posting a photo of himself holding a cap that said “Communism will win.” Spenser Rapone left the Army with an other-than-honorable discharge after delivering his resignation Monday.”
It isn’t cheating if you don’t get caught.* If you don’t get caught, it is called “outsmarting the system”.
*Yes, I know that’s a double negative. OK for effect.
A nomination is required to attend West Point. There are two types: Congressional (your Representative or one of your State’s Senators) and Service-Connected.
Agree they are not worthy of being in West Point.
Rapone may end up being right the way things are going down in this country.
I’m conflicted. On the one hand, they cheated and that suggests that they aren’t smart enough to make the cut but, on the other hand, they were wise enough to recognize their own weakness and they adapted and improvised. So maybe I wouldn’t want them designing rockets but maybe I would want them leading soldiers into battle. Maybe. If they recognized their weakness in battle and “cheated” to compensate, I think I’d be all right with that if they won the battle. In this situation, however, they should have studied harder so they didn’t go into battle with this weakness. That’s not always possible however and that’s why there’s a winner and a loser in every battle.
VMI is the only single sanction honor system left. Northam and his goons want to destroy it.
“All 73 should have been expelled.”
I AGREE!
—”If you don’t understand calculus it is going to be more difficult understanding subsequent math and science courses.”
I still have the lumps on my noggin...
Calculus is difficult because you are weak in trig, you are weak in trig because you never understood geometry ...
Or something like that.
they should have busted him down to private and made him clean out Gitmo porta potties. With a straw.
If the academy was smart, they’d run regular sting oprations with several wrong answers seeded in the cheat sheet as the “tells” to catch cheaters. Would make all very leery of the “honest” cheat sheets.
The American taxpayer pays for West Point; thus, all names should be publicized. A slap on the wrist for cheating? Absurd. Must be the football team.
Interesting point. The “Doing whatever it takes to win” mindset even if you have to break a few rules has to be useful somewhere...
I suspect all of the expelled were white males.Perhaps.
If they were white AND not "connected" in any way. If you are white and have military or political connections, you are as safe as a diversity hire.
maybe “special “ class of people
Not the first time this has happened
The cheating scandal is the biggest at West Point since 1976, when 153 cadets resigned or were expelled for cheating on an electrical engineering exam. The 1976 case is considered more serious, Ophardt said, because it was upperclassmen who planned, collaborated and executed the cheating. “The whole system broke down,” Ophardt said.
In the 1976 cheating scandal, the secretary of the Army appointed a select commission headed by former astronaut Frank Borman to review the case and more than 90 of those caught cheating were reinstated and allowed to graduate, Ophardt said.
This is true. However, how much calculus does an army officer need if his primary future career path is to kill people and break things?
I wonder if the 7 who were expelled will be required to serve in the Army as enlisted men/women? Or if they will be given a dishonorable or less than honorable discharge with monetary fine to repay the cost of education received?
