'It seems like nobody wants to work': Local restaurants say they are struggling to hire employees

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala (WALA) -- As COVID restrictions continue to be loosened, there is a major problem affecting many restaurants in the area.

It is a staffing problem.

“It seems like nobody wants to work these days,” said Maurice White, Owner of Big White Wings in Prichard.

White hired one person recently, but is still searching for six more.

“Very frustrating when you know the bills are coming and you’re not making the money to accommodate the bills coming cause the bills are not stopping,” he said.

While the signature Stupid Fries and wings continue to draw crowds, White says the staffing struggles comes down to people not wanting to work.

“They got all these stimulus checks and everything, that’s no problem with me worried about people getting their money, but it makes it hard on small businesses on people want to come and work,” he said.

Restaurants in Downtown Mobile are also on a hiring spree.

Squid Ink owner Pete Blohme owns four restaurants in the area, all in need of workers.

“We’re probably 20% down across the board,” he said. “Typically, during prime season our company will employ 150 to 160 people and we’re way below that now.”

It is not just a problem in the Port City, Blohme says it is a national issue.

“I just came from California doing some work out there and I was probably with a dozen other restaurateurs and chefs and it’s a terrible problem nationwide staying staffed,” he said.

Back at Big White Wings, they are still serving food six days a week as White works to hire and train.

“We’ll be back open tomorrow, but we don’t know when we’ll stay back open to 7 again,” he said.

The National Restaurant Association says employment has risen the last three months but is still well below what it was before the pandemic.

We have more than 500 locations nationwide and hiring is VERY difficult at the moment even with wages up 40% from 5-6 years ago (and still rising rapidly). No one wants to work if they can make the same or more sitting at home.

its not just restaurants, its gas stations, groceries, factories, all kinds of places!

why should people work when they can make much more by staying home and cashing all the welfare checks (including ‘stimulus’), grift all the free food boxes, eat all the prepared hot free meals at the free dining halls, enjoy the free health care, collect and use or sell all the free gasoline vouchers, collect and use or sell all the free rent and utility vouchers, collect and use or sell all the free furniture vouchers, collect and sell or use all the free ebt/food stamps, etc eetc.. AND PAY NO TAXES ON ANY OF IT

You can't just keep printing money and handing it out to BLM/ANTIFA terrorists and Dem far left crazies who hate to work, like Dementia Joe is doing. There will be hell to pay sooner rather than later.

That’s a staggering note. Sit at home and let any marketable skills atrophy, or put in a shift and develop yourself to fulfull your potential. This country is in trouble when a lifetime can be spent in idleness.

It could also be because we have been brainwashed and propagandized all this past year to be afraid of each other as if we are all highly contagious with a virus that is sure to kill or disable if you catch it. People are afraid to interact with each other more than absolutely necessary.

Many who have been working from home don’t want to go back to the office for the same reason. They don’t want to be around people.

Every single place in my area has help wanted signs.

Those same stores are running a skeleton staff.

It’s insane.

Right.

For the many years I had to work before retirement I would see many people at the mall or elsewhere enjoying life on welfare or SSDI of some sort. I resented them.

Now millions more are used to “where’s my government money?” and would feel insulted to have to do work. Just let the white supremacists work or else invest their capital. They’ll just smoke marijuana, drink booze, watch tv, play video games, text or sleep all day.

And don’t forget to take a second job to pay for the new reparations to blacks for pre 1860s slavery. They still shudder feeling that pain of slave days.

I hear the same thing from warehouse operators and trucking companies.

Its ironic how typical government meddling in the name of “worker protection” has simply caused a large segment of the least-skilled labor to simply say - “FU. I’d rather sit at home.”

I guess that is what the Leftists have planned...ie to put most on welfare until their jobs are gone.

A talk radio caller I heard during Obama said he recently left his job of connecting people with welfare and other benefits. When Obama came to the White House the rules changed.

The caller said “I worked to get the big daily pile of recipient records all set and told my supervisor “I’ll get to work matching their skill sets to open jobs.” He said, “No. Don’t mention anything to any of them about jobs. The new way from the top in DC is they don’t need to look for work to get benefits.”

About a week ago I drove through a Tim Horton’s a couple of miles from where I live to get a cup of coffee, and there was a sign saying they were temporarily shut down due to lack of staffing. I was over in that area again Thursday evening and that same store was still shut down. Last night I was on my way home and another Tim’s closer to where I live was completely dark and empty, and that one’s normally packed in the the drive through.

I notice for hiring signs everywhere in my town now. Also some places are closing earlier now due to not enough staffing.

Perhaps the name of the company is putting people off. I remember, many years ago, a company in Britain called I think “White’s Eat In” which was accused of racism, the name implied only whites could eat there.

It is more them that.

People who are willing to work are not willing to wear a training burka to do so.

I do not require my employees to wear one. Other local business have offered them higher wages to work for them but they have stuck with me because the wage would have to be extraordinaire to make up for the work conditions.

Paying people not to work is “anti-stimulus.”

It also drives up cost of US labor, giving an advantage to foreign companies.
