“Among themselves the Afghans are quarrelsome, intriguing and distrustful; estrangements and affrays are of constant occurrence; the traveller conceals and misrepresents the time and direction of his journey. The Afghan is by breed and nature a bird of prey.”
These are hard words, ones that would never appear in a modern reference book. But they are full of genuine wisdom, the fruit of decades of British experience in Afghanistan, which even the Empire upon which the sun never set could not subdue. The Russians couldn’t do it, either, which was why the United States was happy to watch the crumbling Soviet Union waste what was left of its military might there in the 1980s. Why did we think we would fare any better?
The truth is, though, that even Biden isn’t going to have an easy time getting us out of Afghanistan. Like both of his predecessors, he is about to discover that the Pentagon is used to getting whatever it wants and that the US foreign-policy establishment has decades worth of spurious justifications for keeping American troops in the region indefinitely. While it would be nice to think that the president has enough of a mandate to push through a withdrawal, there are good reasons to remain dubious.
In his speech announcing the move on Wednesday, Biden said that all 2,500 US troops will be home by Sept. 11. This is a fitting date.
But I will believe it when I see it.

It all started with Pay any price, bear any burden. 1961.
Most of the current college freshmen and sophomores were born after 9/11. From their perspective, we have always been at war in Afghanistan.

The guy leading this said never get involved in the country...they hate out siders and just needed help getting rid of Osama bin Laden
It’s not a question of seeing folly. this has nothing to do with the burden of foreign adventures. It’s all about reprogramming money to advance the socialist agenda. The money will be diverted to domestic programs where it can buy more votes.
Trump would have gotten the withdrawal done already. Biden will crumble and stall and never get us out. The Lincoln Project and the like will whisper and threaten and cajole him and his handlers, and our boys will continue to die on that miserable dirt over there. He was supported by the military/industrial complex to rescue them from Trump’s peace efforts and return the M.E to the warring hell hole they rely on.
It was never about anything except keeping the generals and ticket punchers happy and keeping the arms industry in clover.
Not to worry. They’ll come up with something else and the doddering fool in the WH will do what his treasonous lackeys recommend.
There are legitimate questions about what, if anything, we have accomplished long term in Afghanistan.
But we should all remember, we got into Afghanistan as a result of September 11th, because the Taliban gave safe haven to Bin Laden.
We have a pretty brand new shiny $5 billion army base in the green zone of Kabul
In other words were never really leaving
But clearly getting out now (or even years ago) is the right choice. The bulk of the duplicitous people there will get what they deserve: endless war and totalitarianism.
We will not be leaving.
Mandate? He didn’t even campaign!
Time will tell
Biden will redeploy those 2500 soldiers to DC & house them in a garage...
“Afghans are quarrelsome, intriguing and distrustful ...”
He left out that they’re nasty sexual abusers. I’ve heard that from two soldiers that were over there.
Yes, I have friends who were there and were sickened by the foulness of the Afghans, particularly as regards rape of children.
The propaganda press is claiming it was actually Biden who wanted to withdraw troops when he was VP so it was Biden all along. Biden is so dreamy.
