Newsom pushes school reopening as many districts resist

Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration said Wednesday that all California schools should reopen when the new academic year begins next fall, though his guidelines remain merely an expectation rather than a mandate.

Newsom has repeatedly said he sees no barriers to getting kids back into classrooms now, as California’s COVID-19 infections continue to drop and more residents get vaccinated.

That’s a far cry from the current situation in California, where many schools have reopened classrooms part-time with a mix of in-person and at-home learning. Many district officials and teachers are reluctant to return. And it remains unclear if all 6.2 million public school students will be back in classrooms this year or at the start of the next school year.

But even with schools able to open, only 62% of elementary school students and not quite 40% of older students have the option to return, according to a tracker maintained by the Los Angeles Times.

Even in districts with in-class options, parents have complained of inadequate time as some offer just a few hours of instruction per week, primarily for younger students.

And school taxes have not decreased proportionately.

Open up a building, preferably little and red, and hire a non-union teacher, a single woman in her thirties of good repute, and install a bell on the roof that rings at the start of each day. Parents each contribute in accordance with the number of children they have enrolled, and each student does assignments commensurate with their age group. And stop paying school property taxes. Tell the bureaucrats, “YOU’RE FIRED!”

The important thing is that the teachers continue to receive their full paychecks...regardless of school openings.

These are special people and must be treated accordingly.

Every parent in California should be outraged. How could there be even one who still supports either Newsom or the Democrat party?

I think it is way past time to fire some worthless, lazy teachers. It is obvious that they just don’t want to work.

By the time September comes around it’ll be too late.

Mom’s and Dad’s don’t want to be around their kids 24 hours...

LOL

I’ve said this before. If they are in the 10th-12th grade, and don’t plan on attending a university, they should just drop out and get their GED. Since school districts are funded by numbers of students, a 20% reduction in students should result in a 20% reduction in funding. Starve the beast. Besides, aren’t teachers always complaining about class sizes? This would help.

Newsom froze the funding at 2019 levels for a few years into the future, so students leaving won’t help. That said, I moved one teen to private (she’s back in 4 days full time) and one to homeschooling. My next concern is Fall 2021 college. Cal state is only offering 50% hybrid or in person at best. Even though all professors will be vaccinated by then.
