Will Oxford University Start Smashing Pianos as Communist China Did in the Cultural Revolution?
American Thinker ^ | 04/12/2021 | Fay Voshelle

World-renowned violinist Isaac Stern arrived in Shanghai to give a recital shortly after Mao Zedong's  Cultural Revolution ended in 1976.

He could not find a playable piano in all of the city.  All 500 pianos at the city's conservatory had been smashed by frenzied Maoist revolutionists determined to eradicate the influence of Western music.

Those familiar with the excesses of Maoist China should note with growing alarm that ideas similar to those foundational to Mao's Cultural Revolution have found their way into the music department of Oxford University.

Oxford music professors, encouraged by BLM representatives to repudiate what is deemed white supremacism characterized by classical Western music, have targeted university's traditional focus on irredeemably "colonialist" composers like Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven.

As the Post Millennial magazine reports, the wish is to de-emphasize the curriculum's emphasis on white composers.  But that is not all that is to be scrapped in order to accommodate the offended.

Significantly, the piano once again has been singled out as an obnoxious symbol of Western oppression.

Members of the music department propose that students not be required to learn to play the piano or conduct orchestras, as those practices are centered on white European music and cause "students of colour great distress." Even the way music is taught, some complain, is a problem because the "vast bulk of tutors for techniques are white men."

Oxford will discover that it will not be enough to trash Western music because more often than not, it has been composed and conducted by white men. The demands of ideological barbarism known as cultural Marxism coupled with Critical Race Theory will doubtless soon affect other disciplines. Soon the demand will be that the entire university, which currently is rated as the best university in the world, be completely restructured,

The demands of ideological barbarism known as cultural Marxism

**************

By their perverted logic everything invented by white men should be destroyed. Its amazing how passive and tolerant white society is toward this insane barbarism.

So they will create “music” by banging overturned plastic buckets on street corners for money, and it will be glorious!

The best Western Classical music I have heard recently was performed by people from China.

The torch of Western Civilization (and religion) has moved East.

At least they will tear up all sheet music and ban downloading of the colonist “music”; later expansion will include the Beatles, Presley, Doors, Joplin, Slick etc. Hendricks will be pilloried as a sell out, as will Ella, Armstrong, etc

Music major will be encouraged to study Black Rap and African precolonial music

And Japan. It's ironic that Asia may save the Western Civilization that the retards here are trying to destroy.

I’m interested in the latter. Can you direct me to a link that actually plays African precolonial music?

I’d love to, but as the African music is **precolonial** and that was before the invention of the internet, iPhones, radio, tape recorders, and other live transcription devices; to actually experience the real thing, you need time machine, but that has not been invented yet. Modern African players are sell outs to the tourist trade so they are unreliable sources. :)

When has an Oxford grad or an Ivy League grad ever helped any of us?

Oxford is one of the UK’s elite and privileged college for elite/spoiled rich brats.

So, they can do whatever they desire/want inside the walls of Oxford.

The problem with China is that the Chinese are either pragmatists or gutless. They will send their children away from the Middle Kingdom as soon as they possibly can, perhaps marry a Westerner, enroll their kids in piano lessons, but they will not condemn the CCP. All of their Paul Reveres and Samuel Adamses are dead. The ones that are remaining can be bought by the billions the Chicoms make.

Why is it that Gordon Chang/Epoch Times are the lone voice of CCP opposition?

RE: They will send their children away from the Middle Kingdom as soon as they possibly can, perhaps marry a Westerner, enroll their kids in piano lessons, but they will not condemn the CCP.

The CCP will follow you anywhere you go. Look at Yen Lee Meng, the Chinese virologist who told the world that the Coronavirus was DESIGNED in a Wuhan Lab. She might be safe in America ( questionable ), but her MOTHER was arrested and jailed. Australian Chinese residents have also been threatened into keeping their collective mouths shut. The billionaire and founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma, who used to travel around the world often, is nowhere to be found nowadays.

So, most Chinese who go overseas would rather keep quiet and not cause trouble. Also, here is another thing — many have this victim complex... they still want a STRONG China in order to prevent other countries where they live in from looking down on them. A strong China (even a totalitarian one ) reflects on THEM as individuals and as a group.

The Gauls and Germans saved it last time.

With the Slavs grabbing the near east.

All barbarian peoples who had no idea what civilization was at first.

A Han friend once told me “You know Red, your people were painting their buts blue and charging armored infantry while mine were making clocks and paper!”

When president Xi or Putin finally come in and take over without firing a shot, it’ll be a big improvement

That's the image. But writing as an Oxford graduate from a working class family in a naval town, the first from that family to go to any kind of university, I can tell you Oxford hasn't conformed to that simplistic image for a very long time.

Our country hasn't had much in the way of open existential challenges in a long time.

Meanwhile society has gradually changed into an artificial structure optimized for the making of money. Economics-as-ideology has taken over and healthy, organic social relations are harder.

Mass media is a creature of this takeover of society by economics. It's designed to sink its fingers into you, the consumer, and then to hollow you out as a person and make you pliant in the "right" ways. It eats away at you and causes the "old" virtues to atrophy.

It's a systematic parasitical exploitation of society that we've... tolerated... for a long time as the price of modernity. It'll come down to the insane barbarism (your apt terminology) versus a rediscovery of our long-lost cultural underpinnings, the old virtues. (and dare I say, Christianity?)

***************

People will tolerate deteriorating things, and even bad conditions, for an amazingly long time. It seems that it takes some type of catalyst that causes widespread fear or pain to challenge peoples’ views and motivate them to alter their opinions as a response to self-preservation.

Such a moment is coming to America, most likely in the form of a financial disaster. But it could well be some other type of event or societal breakdown that finally gets their attention.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot of fear and pain to get people to acknowledge that “something has gone terribly wrong.” We’re very slow learners.

We are deep into cultural revolution.

It may actually be worse than the Chinese one.

To find out the force behind all this insanity you need to look no further than postmodernism which has totally taken over academia and is now oozing into society at large.

It denies that there is such a thing as objective reality and even logic. Everything is what anyone thinks it should be and if you object, you’re the oppressor.

So at anyone time everyone is both an oppressor and oppressed.
