Howard’s “Conan” stories - and those of his other creations, Red Sonya, Soloman Kane, King Kull, and others - were a huge boon to me growing up as a kid in the 1970s.
He and his contemporaries - like HP Lovecraft - paved the way for so many years of great fiction and short tales that they will be enjoyed for generations to come, despite any “cancel culture”.
Give a boy a boy’s book and let him enjoy the damn thing. CROM!
A wonderfully barbaric ping
One “rebel” away from being a Tracy Lawrence song
Does that make us Thulsa Doomers or Boomers?
Conan the Big Meanie.
To reign (< Latin "regnum") = to rule.
To rein in: to limit or control.
Sheesh! And this fellow dares to criticize other authors!
Regards,
Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs should be required reading for young men. We might have fewer mincing little pansies taking estrogen to grow boobs.
Robert Heinlein as well. 1984 is mandatory.
Anyone see this film, is it any good?

Barbarians gotta be barbarous.
I enjoyed the Conan stories in paperback form and later the Marvel comics. In the comics, which were adapted by Roy Thomas, they followed Conan’s career in a rough chronological order. He starts out a a rather uncouth barbarian and becomes more educated and sophisticated as he matures. He stays somewhat barbaric because R.E. Howard seemed to believe there was more truth and honesty in barbarians than in “civilized” people.
Conan Rules!
That movie got good reviews. I’ve never seen it. Even thought I loved the Conan stories and comic books, Howard himself does not interest me. Even though he wrote some very good, atmospheric tales he seems to have been something of a loser.
“ Barbarians gotta be barbarous.”
If you read enough of Conan’s exploits you soon realize who the true barbarians are. They’re the ones that hide behind a a contrived and thinly-veneered civility.
Loved the Howard stories. The ones co-written with Decamp and Carter... not so much.
Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour created some pretty cool characters that could pack a wallop!
Here is a neat site for the pure Howard stories.

Miller? Seems to me he did nothing more that blend his own dark and twisted mindset into someone else’s work. Creating trash.
Moore?...” new sensibilities exposed the politically incorrect flaws of superheroes” ...”new sensibilities” equals snowflake soap bubble sensitivity. Spare me your frothing liberal vomit.
I think we have reached a point in history where the idea of necessity being the mother of invention has transitioned into the father of invention is greed. Its evident that mankind has way too much free time on their hands.
