Philip was also the great-nephew of the last Empress of Russia, and more distantly related to the Tsar. He said about the Bolsheviks, “That bloody lot killed my whole family!”

"He was also a serving officer in the RN during WW2"

HE'S A GERMAN!!

Mountbatten is a direct Anglicisation of the German Battenberg (literally Batten Mountain), a small town in Hesse. The title of count of Battenberg, later prince of Battenberg, was granted to a morganatic branch of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, itself a cadet branch of the House of Hesse, in the mid 19th century.

Victoria was known as Europe’s Grandmother. Her children married across European royalty, including Prussia and Russia. Unfortunately they carried the gene for Hemophilia

The Queen doesn’t come across as a sit around and sulk type.

Didn’t the Mountbattens adopt him, I though Philip was Greek.

It’s so hard to keep up with these things.

If they’re smart - they’ll have a small private family service at Windsor. If Markle doesn’t show, it will be a good opportunity to mend some fences between Harry and his brother and father.

If you mean by "mending the fences" that William kicks his a*.

Wondering if this will be the event that prompts Elizabeth to finally abdicate.

Philip’s mother was a Mountbatten; he adopted his mother’s family name.

So far. the markle clan has shown no aversion to awkwardness.

The press will thrive on that rather than the purpose.

Probably not. Suspect even though the Commonwealth has put their stamp of approval on Chuckles last year, she’ll try to outlive him. Hoping she holds strong and true.

In 1947, she said, “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

Again, in 1953, she devoted her life, “I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine. Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust. In this resolve I have my husband to support me. He shares all my ideals and all my affection for you.”

he was polite, harmless, avoided controversy, and didn't meddle in things.

He was known for his comments to the press, which were colorful, laugh-out-loud witty, and cheerfully trashed the idols of political correctness. He was a champion of Western culture and civilization.

R.I.P., M'Lord!
