WHP Facebook Share Icon Twitter Share Icon Email Share Icon When asked what could be behind a surge of COVID-19 cases in young people, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed to youth sports as a possible factor.
"School sports, particularly team sports, which people engage in close contact without masks. I think that's what is explaining these surges of cases in young individuals." Fauci said.
But representatives of Central PA youth sports leagues pushed back, saying they had seen little to no difference.
"I wouldn't be able to give you a good answer if its worse, better or if you know what I mean," said Doug Bohannon of the Eastern Lebanon County School District. "But has it been noticeable where you think you have to change any of the protocols we have currently? Not at this time, and I'm just speaking for the LL league."
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PIAA) went further, releasing a statement saying that they had no data supporting team to team transmission. Their statement is below:
We do not feel that statement is reflective of interscholastic athletics. Our numbers from winter sports of teams with positive cases in playoffs was extremely low. And we have no data at all to support any team to team transmission...
..We also received information from our Sports Medicine Advisory committee on Monday, March 1, 2021 that there have been 6 peered reviewed articles published in medical journals indicating that the transmission in outdoor sports is negligible."
