United Airlines is taking a bizarre business risk and announcing to the world that it will no longer hire the best pilots available but will instead make sure that 50% of their trainees for flying you around the world will be women and minorities—talent and skill be damned. I’m not making this up. I wish I were.
Our flight deck should reflect the diverse group of people on board our planes every day. That’s why we plan for 50% of the 5,000 pilots we train in the next decade to be women or people of color. Learn more and apply now.....
Their website details this diversity commitment with more wokespeak than I can usually tolerate in one paragraph:
Today, United has one of the most diverse pilot populations of any U.S. carrier with nearly 20% of our pilot group made up of women and people of color. We are working toward raising that number even higher by partnering with diversity-led organizations and continuing to remove gender and racial barriers. And we’re going one step further with plans for 50% of United Aviate Academy students being women and people of color to ensure our students reflect the diversity of the customers and communities we serve

Hey, CEO of United, you need brain or cardiac surgery.
Do you want the best doctor, if he happens to be White or just any old poc or female?

Our flight deck should reflect the diverse group of people on board our planes every day. Here's a novel idea, United. How about hiring pilots that can keep the planes safely in the air?

Witness the 737 debacle. The crashes did not happen here in the U.S. If they did, maybe things would be different.

You are right. The race will never be reported, but we can guess that “Shanequa” is not a white male.
United is run by a diverse group and this policy is embarrassing to me, a retired pilot.
I wonder who pressured the heads of corporate to declare this bold move? It is disgustingly racist and sexist to declare goals that include sex and race as qualifying for employment in the cockpit. You get the best qualified, (still the military trained), experienced, pilot and train him or her to fly your airplanes. Quotas just plain SUCK! Quotas do not account for cultural traits. Ask the survivors of the “we too low,” “Sum Ting Wong,” flight that flipped, landing at SFO!

Haven’t flown since 2006. I will not tolerate the airport experience any more in my lifetime. There is no place on this planet I feel a need to fly to ever again.

The title really says it all: "United Airlines Announces They Will No Longer Hire the Best Pilots". I wonder at the inevitable crash that involves one of their virtual signally affirmative hires, how they will explain and defend? Blaming pilot error when you have the best pilot was often the end of the discussion; now, blaming the pilot error when they knowingly and publicly chose to not hire the best pilot shifts and recenters the blame squarely upon the airline. Even the injured or dead affirmative action pilot or estate could sue, I figure, as they company knowingly put them in a situation they were not best equiped to handle.
I rarely fly United and will now make sure that is even rarer.

It’s all part of the plot to move everyone on to high speed rail service.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. Isn’t it much easier to fly a commercial jet nowadays than it was 50-60 years ago? Newer models, most of the flying is automated amyway?Yes it is. Until something goes wrong...

This crap will continue increasing in frequency until it has gone so far that things fall apart around us. At that point, it will be too late to put things right.Like with surgeons...

We have also seen recently that those too dependent upon those automated systems, rather than checking things themselves, are more likely to crash.

You really wanna trust just anyone with that? I don’t care how ‘easy’ you think it is, you can’t have subpar pilots or doctors at the helm of anything and expect a good and/or safe outcome. As my dean told us at graduation day...
A nation (culture or civilization for that matter) cannot have incompetent philosophers nor plumbers. If it does, neither it's ideas not it's pipes will hold water.

I have a close friends who is a pilot major airline. He fly’s 787s, probably the most advanced commercial aircraft in service. He’s close to retirement, and very glad he is because the crap he see going on in the industry now is stupid beyond belief.I have a friend who was a chief pilot for United (retired naval aviator on top of that) who took the retirement package back in October. Seems like he made the right choice.
