BLM recruitment video says you will “have the time of your life”
Wildfire Today ^ | 7 April 2021 | Bill Gabbert

The Bureau of Land Management released yesterday a tw0-minute video that supposedly answers questions, including, “Should I apply to be a wildland firefighter with the BLM?” This is at best, misleading, since most if not all of their employees that do fight fire work under job titles of “Forestry Technician” or “Range Technician”.

Besides the “Should I apply” question, the video addresses others, such as:

“I don’t know, it seems kind of boring. And not fun at all. “What if I get dirty? “What would I do in my free time?”

My first firefighting job was for the BLM in 1974, on the Vale District in SE Oregon. It was fun, you did get dirty, and on your free time you drank a lot of beer. Paid around $2.80/hr, but quite a bit of overtime. Good summer job for a 19-year-old, and I kept fighting fires in the summers for the BLM and the Forest Service until the mid-80s.

Decades ago I worked as a surveyor for the BLM. I'd see the fire crews, and sometime have to layout fence lines for them. Most of the time the fire crews build and repair fences, clear brush, and do miscellaneous maintenance. They might never see a fire if they are lucky. It's great work for a young person. I guess today's generation doesn't want to work outdoors. Or work for that matter. Probably no cell phone signal either. LOL.

“They might never see a fire if they are lucky.”

I assure you, the fire crews look at it exactly the opposite. Fires are when you make more money and get to do something a bit more exciting than building fence.

I wish I could go back to five minutes ago, when I only had “Hot Legs” stuck in my head.

Wow! When I read the headline with BLM in it I thought at first the article was about Black Lives Matter, a fully Marxist organization.

Slightly different situation, but the other day near the end of my morning run, I passed the slightly under 200’ cell phone tower. A couple of men had pulled up with a box trailer and two large pickup trucks. They were working with a bunch of stuff at the base of the fenced in area of the tower. It took me a little while to decide to talk to them, but since my since deceased brother had worked for Motorola in quality control of the base electronics for cell phone transmitters and at least in pre-covid, people working in unusual jobs didn’t/don’t seem to mind discussing their work with interested kibitzers, I made my way over there.

“What are you up to?” was my question. “Putting up more antennas” was the gist of his response. A little more questioning resulted in determining that the effort would take about a week and a half. It was obvious that English was the young man’s second language and being unable to shed my inherent racism, I skipped the technical questions and turned to leave. In the meantime, a whole bunch more large pickups had unexpectedly arrived. The crew was all Mexicans.

Either we do not have a cohort of “natives” interested in this kind of work any more or the “non-natives” will work for less. Unfortunately, it seems the government, national and state, pays people enough not to work more than some good jobs pay.

I think I know where all the Biden green and infrastructure jobs are going.
