The IRS is mailing out “probably thousands” of threatening letters that warn taxpayers their property is about to be seized for unpaid taxes — even though the government already got its money, The Post has learned.
The scary situation is the latest snafu involving the hated agency, which last year issued similarly baseless threats to confiscate state tax refunds to cover purportedly unpaid federal taxes, CNBC reported at the time.
That blunder came after House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) in August called on the IRS to stop sending out notices for unpaid taxes because it had let about 12 million pieces of mail pile up during the summer.

This is how they will get people to “volunteer” to turn in their guns.
We used to call sending Threatening Letters in the Mail for Non Existent Debts, MAIL FRAUD and it is a MAJOR FELONY. Anyone that gets one of these Fraudulent Letters should file formal charges with the US Post Office.
Why is it being interpreted as ‘seize’? Levy/Lien on the property is what the IRS normally does on overdue taxes. I guess it could depend on the amount but still...I think that is their process initially.
My son is going thru a similar situation. It’s crazy.
Last week I got a letter from the i.r.s.
They said something about processing my amended return from 2018. The last thing I did with them was before the scamdemic. So I haven’t a clue what this is about.
Never in the past 2 or 3 years have I known where I stand with the i.r.s. I send in paper stuff and never hear back.
It’s like I have to hire an accountant to go into the i.r.s database to see what’s done and what’s pending and what’s not done.
The IRS is a criminal organization.
What are the odds? 🤔
Adopt a simple universal low flat tax rate with no exceptions, no exemptions, no deductions and no credits.
It can be low because being universal without any excuses(loopholes) would make it the broadest tax possible.
Being universal and flat would also make it the most “equitable” - everyone pays X % and that’s all there is to it.
It can be collected in like manner as retail taxes are collected - at time of any income payment. No annual forms to file after figuring out which loopholes are applicable and how applicable. Your taxes will already be paid in full when whomever paid for your income collected them.
Banks would have to revise their accounting procedures to know in what year any particular earnings (interest &/or dividends) were credited to your accounts, so that they would not on what interests/dividends taxes had already been paid (in year earned).
Personally, while I do not think dividends should be taxed at a higher rate than labor, I do not see that it is either morally or economically necessary that they be taxed lower than is labor. I believe personal income should be personal income, period and universally.
On capital gains, to persons or businesses they should only be taxed for the year they were actually realized, and not just because they look like a gain (on paper your stocks have appreciated in value) though a gain not credited to your account. Yes, some gains should obtain a lower flat tax rate if they are not turned into cash (cash & equivalents) but fully reinvested.
Corporate income taxes ought to be done similarly - universally across all industries and business sectors.
Once we had it working we could enshrine it in a Constitutional amendment.
And yes, because no market economy is perfect (only better) there should for individuals be an income floor below which income is not taxed.
But otherwise you purge 99% of the tax code and can probably do away with a majority of IRS employees.
One of my all time favorite movies.
"Oh, yes. Have a nice day!"
One of the letters my son received said that, according to their records. He received advanced payments for the Marketplace (Obamacare). My son was furious! He is self employed and pays for his own private insurance and always has. He called 3 times today, finally got an old guy working from home that told him because of CV they’re way behind. My son says they are threatening to size his bank account. The guy said he’d give him 60 instead of 30 and he’d try to get him some answers.
Despite our Founders best efforts, politics are not rational.
The income tax laws were not passed till 1913. We got along well for about 125 years without the 16th Amendment.
Time to abolish the 16th! It needs to go the way of the 18th!
Put Big government back in it’s place as a servant of the People.

Par for the course. Most IRS employees are lazy or incompetent or both. Like some postal workers, sometimes they just throw mail away instead of properly processing it. Plus their computer system is a shambles.
I’ve had to have my senator intervene when I couldn’t get their error resolved after years of documented attempts.
They transposed a child’s SSN when entering it for the first time and thereby rendered her null as a tax exemption and for the next five years demanded proof of existence, birth records, copy of SSN card, over and over again, while simultaneously changing our filing and demanding more taxes.
It just wouldn’t stop and they couldn’t seem to fix or update their records. Strangely, when the senator’s aide contacted them, it was magically fixed and they sent us a hefty refund in a matter of days.
I have no trust in any department of government. They can’t be fired, they have no work ethic and they don’t care how their failures effect others.
Would that be the same IRS that Obama bought full auto M4’s for?
Might as well put the 17th on that list too.
How many trillions of covid relief?
Why are surprised the State suddenly gets overzealous in taking tax money?
The .gov knows a major tax hike won’t pass, but also will find a way to get paid
