A Vietnamese family in Oakland was violently robbed at home. Their daughter saw the whole thing.

A team of robbers held a Vietnamese couple in Oakland hostage, ransacking their home and taking most, if not all, of their life savings. And they did this in front of the family’s seven-year-old daughter.

The violent attack took place late Tuesday night in their home near the Dimond District, after a visit to the temple, just as the family was getting ready for bed. Roseni, whose last name was not provided to KGO’s Dion Lim out of fear of retaliation, heard the sound of glass shattering. She locked her bedroom door.

But the group of four was able to beat the door down. Roseni and her husband Hoang were zip-tied, and her husband brutally beaten.

“They punch him in the mouth and his teeth bleeding ... his neck," Roseni told KGO.

All the while, their daughter, Amy, had witnessed everything. The robbers had forced her to hide under a blanket amid the attack, and threatened to shoot the little girl.

Over the course of the hour-long ordeal, the robbers searched every crevice of the home — leaving no belonging untouched. Among the items stolen, in addition to their life savings: Jewelry straight from Roseni’s wrist, her son’s sneaker collection and precious family heirlooms.

Roseni told the news outlet that one of the robbers spoke to her during the attack.

She recalled the person saying: “Don’t worry, ‘we won’t kill or rape you. We just came here for the money … We have no jobs, we have no money, [COVID-19] is what’s making us do this.”

I'm not sure how this is relevant, unless - perhaps - these are not American citizens, which they seem to be. The article provides no evidence whatsoever that the victims' ethnicity was a factor in the robbery.

When I was first married, we had Vietnamese neighbors who invited us for dinner a couple of times before we moved out of that area. Later on, I worked with a Vietnamese woman who was a good worker with a great sense of humor. Her son became a doctor and her daughter became a professional dancer who was on the Seattle Seahawk "Sea-gal" cheerleading group for a couple of years.
