In the age of COVID, trying to avoid all risk has its downside
NY Post ^ | 2 April A.D. 2021\ | Michael Brome

“This is not politics,” President Joe Biden said last week. “Reinstate the [mask] mandate.” This follows his dismissal of Gov. Greg Abbott’s decisions in Texas as “Neanderthal thinking.”

But maybe the Neanderthals got it right. COVID-19 deaths in Texas plunged in March, and as National Review’s Philip Klein points out, there’s no relationship between mask mandates and coronavirus levels.

Biden is clearly wrong on another point. This is not “not politics.” America’s constitutional federal system, and the latitude that both former President Donald Trump’s administration and the Biden administration have given state governments, have produced distinctly different Democratic and Republican coronavirus policies.

Democrats have tended to impose mask mandates, order restaurants and retail businesses closed, require social distancing. Republicans have tended to push for full-time instruction in schools and to allow open-air gatherings in playgrounds and beaches...

So, this one-dimensional risk-averseness starts to look like an urge to control the movements of others. It’s an urge visible in liberals’ enthusiasm for fixed-rail transit — ruinously expensive trolleys in central cities, California’s high-speed-rail to nowhere. Rails control where people can travel and prevent them from going where they want in their cars.

Some risk-averse policies resulted from an initial and inevitable ignorance about a novel coronavirus. Unlike colds, it doesn’t manifest among children; unlike Ebola, it’s not easily susceptible to contact tracing.

But risk-averse decision-makers are reluctant to abandon any restrictions once they’re in place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director says the CDC data “suggest that vaccinated people do not carry the virus.” But Biden wants mask mandates continued, and Dr. Anthony Fauci talks of double-masking.

"We’re learning that risk aversion can go too far. A 5 mph speed limit could reduce vehicle deaths toward zero, and closure of elementary schools would vastly reduce the spreading of colds. But too much risk aversion can be too risky."

Power grab and using crisis for political purposes disguised as risk aversion and “common good”.

Silver lining.
By the looks of that poll CV-19 has negatively affected leftists far more than conservatives.

#LiberalismIsAMentalDisorder
It makes everyone suffer but liberals suffer the most. :)

So can Biden explain why there’s not a huge pile of dead Republicans but not Democrats if his precious masks and social distancing work?

Even if the government came out and said it is now safe to resume normal activities, such as full capacity concerts or sporting events, how many liberals would demand that they still remain at a lower capacity or mandate masks? My bet is at least half.

Ah, so there IS an upside to this mess.

Most of the people around me must be Republicans because the Dims are all at home, cringing in their safe rooms.

Good.

:D

Trying to avoid all risk is impossible.

People want guarantees and there are none and the government cannot provide the safety and security it keeps promising.

COVID 19 isn't that novel, is it?

But then this was NEVER about public health.

All of life is risk.

Anybody offering absolute success without risk, is a con-artist. Even in Nature, the predator does not get its prey 100% — with no risk to themselves.

So determining the best reward to risk ratios is what the more successful beings do — and hones those discriminations all their lives. The least successful, cower in fear and starve to death — or in these times, overeat themselves to death — thinking that is their security.

There is always a 99% chance of surviving most things — and NEVER the 100% guarantee that one will live forever — as the Gates and Soros promise their minions, even as their faces are falling apart along with their minds. In some earlier times in primitive societies, the old would sacrifice the young into the volcano — thinking that would appease the gods — rather than take them.

And now we have the problem of the caregiving society — rather than every individual learning to take better care of themselves — first and foremost. It’s not a viable future for 100 to have to care for one — who is only dying, so many young in the future, will never have their own lives to live. That makes a mockery out of life — when all we care about is to prolong life with minimal vital activities but the vital signs.

While that may be a Joe Biden (Fauci) promised land, it is not a viable one for everybody else — to determine for themselves what is life, and how to best actualize it for themselves. Undoubtedly, there will be different outcomes — just in all of life (Nature) — and the chances of survival can be modified several fold from 99% to 90% — but never the 100% guarantee of immortality no matter what one does, or guaranteed equal outcomes. That’s not reality but the delusional, hysterical thinking of those who have not made their peace with God.

Happy Easter!

Mask wearing causes elevated blood CO2 levels.

Elevated CO2 levels decrease brain function.

No outward differences have been detected in liberals.
