S.C. representative moves to strip MLB of antitrust exemption after stance on Georgia voting law

South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan announced on Friday his intent to propose legislation that would strip the Major League Baseball association of its antitrust exemption, claiming the league's aggressive stance against Georgia's recent election reform bill has rendered it open to more federal oversight.

The MLB announced on Friday its intent to move the 2021 All-Star game out of Georgia over that state's recent package of election reforms that included voter I.D. requirements and other security measures.

On Twitter on Friday afternoon, Duncan wrote that "In light of [the league's] stance to undermine election integrity laws, I have instructed my staff to begin drafting legislation to remove Major League Baseball's federal antitrust exception."

"An overwhelming bipartisan majority of Americans support requiring an ID to vote," he wrote further, "and any organization that abuses its power to oppose secure elections deserves increased scrutiny under the law."

The MLB has been exempt from the Sherman Antitrust Act for several decades under numerous court rulings.

Nice to see at least one Republican fighting back. I wish more would.

Call Congress at (202) 224-3121, call the district offices, and email. Tell them you want this. If it's a Democrat, mention the reduction of the minor leagues.

Make more noise and call for a boycott of MLB.

It seems an appropriate thing to pursue.

I remember going to Angels games after the strike and there were only about 9,000 people in attendance. Maybe we can resurrect that level of interest.

But that shows how naive I am, there will be plenty of posts here at Freerepublic throughout the season cheering these anti-American, mostly foreign players.

America is entering a kind of fascism, where corporations and elites form partnership with big government, statists and extremist politics, to maintain their monopolist / oligopolist advantages.

Its controlable if people would just bankrupt them. We have the power to take them down, but theres always the “hey I’m a lifetime Braves fan so I can’t really boycott” If people would realize money is everything to these woke idiots. Bleed the green out of all them. From Movie stars, sports and retail woke outlets on down.

Was a big baseball fan as a kid - but started my boycott after the bug player strike in the 90s, haven’t watched a major league game since. Would be great if a huge backlash would occur here, but I’m doubting it will

The speech the Atlanta Braves front office should give but won’t:

“We are greatly disappointed in the decision of MLB to move the All-Star Game away from Atlanta.

“It is our belief that baseball is an American pastime, and so it is above political differences. People of all political stripes should feel comfortable enjoying the sport of baseball.

“Unfortunately, MLB has chosen to make all of professional baseball a political venture, and moreover has chosen to embrace one political point of view to the exclusion of others. This is not in the interests of baseball, and must not be allowed to continue.

“It is therefore the decision of the Atlanta Braves that we will no longer participate in Major League Baseball. Effective immediately, we will not play any games with any MLB teams who support the actions of the MLB leadership in taking an unnecessary political stance, and in unjustly punishing the people of metro Atlanta and the world-wide fans of the Atlanta Braves.

“It is our intention to join with other like-minded MLB teams and form our own, separate league, on the principle that American baseball is for all Americans, regardless of politics, race, creed, or any other aspect of American life.

“We sincerely hope that the leadership of MLB will reconsider its brash and foolish act. Nevertheless, our association with MLB and with the National League is hereby dissolved.”

If baseball wants to get involved in politics, show them how the big boys play. Go for it!

Now that MLB is intervening in our politics & elections, it absolutely should be stripped of the exemption.

Some years back I remember watching a particular TV series, might have been a Canadian show. This fantasy show took place in the year 2075 or so, and the world was ruled by Corporations. I realize more each day how this might actually come true.

Yep. A sports league deserves antitrust protection. A political lobbying organization does not.

I actually like the idea for removing the antitrust exemption. I called on the NFL for removing their status as well.

If enough people get behind it, then it might happen. Tax the revenue to help with the spending.

This means that MLB will take revenge on us in SC by moving all of their operations and events out of SC. Which consists of absolutely none. MLB - woke so badly that they didn’t give one thought to the future.
