The Coming Rebranding

Nissan sold cars and trucks for decades before entering the U.S. market. In some nations they were marketed as Nissans; here they were badged as Datsuns, a brand the parent company has owned since the ‘30s. When 1970s gas crises sent U.S. sales soaring, Nissan grew uncomfortable with the Datsun label and decided to make a brand transition. In 1981, small “by Nissan” nameplates appeared on Datsun vehicles. Dealerships were sent NISSAN signs to hang under their DATSUN signs. Soon, the NISSAN signs were moved to the upper position. Then the DATSUN signs came down. In four years, rebranding was complete.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will have to make it work much faster. Not by choice, but by necessity. The transition is already underway.

During the lockdown phase of the pandemic, something happened to the archaic but amiable Uncle Joe parodied by Woody Harrelson on SNL. We’ll never know what. The “basement bunker” Biden was a shadow of the seasoned politician we watched float to the top of the primary field. Though cued by a teleprompter we saw reflected in a framed picture, the veteran public speaker struggled for common words, sometimes losing his train of thought altogether. Neither his alleged stutter nor his penchant for public gaffes could explain it. Anyone who’s suffered through the cognitive decline of a loved one knows the signs. Its onset brings sadness, and deep concern; more so for a Presidential candidate.

Biden’s campaign appearances were few and brief. Aimless movement and clueless comments still suggested a problem, but for a few hours he could pass muster. The brain fog evident on the basement tapes had abated.

Removing the Datsun mark is now considered one of the biggest bonehead corporate decisions of all time. Even worse than "New Coke". Both decisions are now legendary for their stupidity.

A japanese kid just made a new car and can’t think of a name so he runs to his father and asks his dad what should he name the car.

The dad asks, “How soon do you need a name for it, son?”

And the son says “Right now!”, and the father says, “Datsun?”

Great points made about “quiet parts said out loud”.

Why speak about “greatest vote fraud operation in history” when it hadn’t become an issue.

Another not mentioned: “We don’t need your votes” spoken to a group whose votes he clearly would need, unless.....

Joe’s been losing it for a long while.

Obama 3.0 is clear as day, but now I wonder what’s Obie’s goal ? Transforming America or destroying it. I suspect the later.

Really? Hasn’t Nissan done well selling cars with the Nissan name?

It is? I’ve never heard that. At the time I thought it wasn’t a smart decision but I’ve don’t remember hearing any real negative fallout since.

Back before the name change, a Datsun owner in California had vanity plates which read ICE CAR.

Datsun ice car.

The Datsun (UK: /ˈdætsən/, US: /ˈdɑːtsən/)[1] is an automobile brand owned by Nissan. Datsun’s original production run began in 1931. From 1958 to 1986, only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun. By 1986, Nissan had phased out the Datsun name, but re-launched it in June 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets. Nissan has considered phasing out the Datsun brand for a second time in 2019 and 2020.[2]

My original heartthrob...the Nissan Datsun 240Z.

51 years later, still a beautiful car.

Nice.
I had a 73 in blue, with that same front spoiler added.

(great car but back then it was my daily driver and they were not good on rust)

It’s estimated that the total marketing cost of changing from Datsun to Nissan was $500 million.

Kamala is intensely disliked by Americans. She couldn’t get a single delegate during the primary. She is phony, laughs inappropriately, and dumb as a box of rocks.

Once onstage, when Joe is gone, she’ll have zero chance of getting reelected. So they want Joe there for the entire term.

Yeah, good luck with that. Not!

If they were smart Harris would step down first.
And then replaced with AOC or Omar.

Impossible not to love those early Z cars! Such great lines. A guy at work has a restored early Datsun pickup — another nifty vehicle. I remember when you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a Datsun 310 (which are now sought after by racers) or 510.

I’ve always had a positive association with the Datsun name, so I can see how dropping it could’ve turned out to be bad move. But, as someone else said, it seems to me the company hasn’t had trouble selling cars under the Nissan brand and I have a mostly positive association with it too (thanks especially to the early ‘90s 300Z). So maybe it was a wash. Nowadays you can’t throw a rock without hitting an Altima.

Of course Biden is a clunker regardless of branding...

"Nowadays you can’t throw a rock without hitting an Altima."

Is it because they're Altimas...or because they all look alike? This is a picture of common SUVs...I can't find the one I've seen of the sedans...but they ALL look alike also. No imagination...actually it's the drive for aerodynamics.

I hear you, although I once saw someone respond to “they all look the same nowadays” with a pic of a parking lot circa 1940 and darned if the cars didn’t all look remarkably similar. I think there may be more homogeneity of design in previous eras than we remember, especially in standard models like sedans and now SUVs (versus say sports cars).

Between H.R. 1 and the self-destruction of the Republican Party, they probably think they could win in 2024 with a ticket of AOC and O.J. Simpson.

Joe Biden has already said he doesn't know if the Republican Party will still exist in 2024.
