German carmaker Volkswagen is to rebrand itself as "Voltswagen" for the US market to mark its ongoing shift to electric vehicles.

The change applies immediately and will be reflected across its cars, branding and website.

VW, which has committed to sell one million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025, confirmed the plan after it was leaked to US media on Monday.

Some initially thought it was an early April Fool's joke.

Yeah, count me as one of the ones, who is saying: "It's a couple days too early for April Fool's..."

“Some initially thought it was an early April Fool’s joke.”

They have an out. They should use it. They should also sack their marketing consultants.

I can’t imagine how these car companies think they are going to sell millions of their silly electric cars. There’s not enough electrical infrastructure to handle it.

I just thought of a pretty good comeback for the silly “I live in the city and don’t drive much” argument.

So, where do you park? Many city dwellers park on the street where they can, sometimes a block or two away. Good luck with your nightly plug in.

Does your apartment building have plug ins where you can leave your car overnight to charge?

Volta was Italian. How about a good German physicist like Hertz?

"It will always be Burma to me."

I come from a Volkswagon family. My Dad owned 17 through the years. I remember the two 'Vanagon' beasts we had when I was a kid; Mom refused to drive them, LOL!

My first car was a baby blue and white VW Beetle. Standard transmission, ridiculously cold in the winter time, as in NO heat and iced over windows most of the time. I later had a Jetta (Sports Package) and d@mn was that thing fun to drive!

I now have my Dad's Golf. She's a 2001 model (that's TWENTY ONE years old for those reading in Rio Linda) and has a whopping 50,000 miles on her! I've tried various ways of killing her, but she still keeps chugging away. She's my Summer Car. And my Sweetheart. ;)

My dad fought the Germans.
He drove Volkswagens the rest of his life.
I learned to drive in a '71 Volkswagen Beetle.
This is BS.

Voltage is only half of what you need for power. I’m holding out for a Bavarian Motor Wattage car.

Honda named its first mini car "Impact" but had to change it to "Insight" because of the negative connotations of the word.

I don't know that "hertz" would go over well with anyone but the ambulance chasers. Though there is a rental car company that seems to be doing OK with the name.

Volkswagon is already claiming it was a premature April Fools joke.
