The positive test rate identifying infections tumbled to its lowest level in nearly a year, the Health Ministry said Thursday, as the country reached the milestone of immunizing over half against COVID-19.
Figures released by the ministry showed the positive rate for virus tests analyzed Wednesday was just 1.3%, the lowest level since June 2020. A week ago the positive test rate was 2% and a week before that it was 3%.
The numbers have continued a steep decline since January, when the positive test rate reached over 10%.
There were only 470 new patients diagnosed Wednesday, according to the ministry. Since the start of the pandemic, 830,515 people in Israel have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and the number of active patients is 12,906. The death toll Thursday reached 6,157.
In a further indication of shrinking infections, the virus’s basic reproduction number, representing the average number of people each virus carrier infects, was given as 0.55, having dropped from a value of 0.59 given the day before. Any figure under 1 means the outbreak is abating. The figure represents the situation as of 10 days ago due to the incubation period.
Ministry data also showed that 50.07% of the population have now received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that Israel is using for its national COVID-19 inoculation program. Those who have received at least the first dose amount to 55.96% of the population.

Not much good news here if you happen to be one of the Israeli second class citizens - the ones that refuse the vaccine and don’t have the passport.
Virus symptoms are reduced dramatically, but to say that the spread of the virus is dropping is to deny the truth that the vaccines only reduce symptoms not the live virus counts. The virus remains able to mutate and be spread among the population. The vaccines are not creating immunity~
Israel needs to send a large gift to president Trump for pushing the vaccine development at warp speed. We got the vaccine in 9 months instead of 7-10 years.
Where is the problem if vaccinated people’s symptoms are reduced to a minor cold instead of high fevers, needing isolation inside a sealed plastic tent in a hospital connected to a ventilator, followed by long term lung & heart damage. Colds and annual flu are spread millions of times every year.
Pfizer and Moderna report that the Brazilian strain is stopped by the current vaccines.
The positivity rate has fallen over 70%. I would say that shows immunity.
One virus at a time. In 4-6 months scientists can create new vaccines using the breakthrough mRNA techniques for future mutant virus invasions.
Then why did the report from an interview with a Moderna researcher report that the vax is not providing immunity to the virus just reducing the symptoms? And the ‘testing’ so boldly touted is not near as effective or accurate as assumed.
The report used about tax not providing immunity is very old. Because it is being used in the pandemic, they could not make that representation. However the data are now clearly showing reduction in transmission and cases. Most people are stuck on the “does not reduce transmissibility” that was circulating months ago.
Additionally, there is a 100% abatement of serious illness and death. So even if we were to assume “it does not stop transmission” (it does), it stops death and critical illness. Well worth it.
