The white man charged Wednesday with killing eight people, including six women of Asian descent, at three Atlanta-area spas told authorities he was not driven by bigotry and that he had a "sexual addiction" and saw the businesses as "a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate," investigators said.
Capt. Jay Baker, the director of communications of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office in Georgia, sparked outrage when he said at a news conference Wednesday that the suspect, Robert Aaron Long, 21, had had "a really bad day" Tuesday, "and this is what he did."
On Thursday, the sheriff's office acknowledged that Baker's comments "have become the subject of much debate and anger" and claimed they "were not intended to disrespect any of the victims, the gravity of this tragedy, or express empathy or sympathy for the suspect."
Investigators said they had not ruled out a racial motive, and experts say they should not.
"You can't ask perpetrators what they think," said Elaine Gross, president of the New York-based civil rights organization ERASE Racism. "That's not how we determine whether something is or isn't a hate crime."
If Long "had a bad day," she asked, "then why wasn't there a variety" among the victims? "That has to count for something."

Then why did the owner of Comet Pizza get to determine whether he was running a child sex ring? After all, the rumor was ‘debunked’ (at least by Snopes and the media) with one phone call to him - he said, to the effect: “No, there is no underground basement here where we sexually abuse children”.
And with that, no more credibility to the allegations against Comet Pizza.

There used to be 1960s ads in the folk music magazine Sing Out about how Soviets don’t have fangs and it’s time for peace, etc. Communist Party member Pete Seeger and others promoted that to weaken people’s resistance to Communist takeover.

OK. Maybe he WAS looking for diversity of ‘Spa Massagers’ but found only Asians. Thus the ‘bad day’.

He doesn’t get to decide. But if the only evidence of racism is that 6 of 8 women were Asian, then that is not very good evidence. It’s more indicative of the fact that a large percentage gave of the employees were Asian than anything else.

But they will spend years interviewing serial killers, looking for victims, their locations, and . . . motivation.

Oh, please. If the issue is whether or not it’s an anti-Asian attack, then it damn well does matter what he says. Pretending otherwise just makes it that much easier for people to create their own narrative to help push their agendas.

That’s done after trial and conviction and even then, you are trusting the word of a mass murderer or serial killer. As for me, I did not believe Ted Bundy and I’m not believing a word that the Atlanta killer says.
For now, let the police and the prosecutors investigate and go to trial.
Mr. Long has the right to take the stand at his trial and explain his addictions and motivations.
There’s always someone who used to be a pert around,

The guy confessed and explained why he did this. His reason
made sense in a crazy ass whacked out sort of way. He seems
to have mental health issues, as well as out of control sex
addiction issues.
The ex-perts explain he can’t shed light on what the issues
were, and that they are here to help.
So the ex-perts are busily trying to come up with protections
from White racists, when this wasn’t a racist attack at all.
It should be clear to everyone by now, why they are ex-perts.
