Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware was seen joining a Senate hearing from a train while not wearing a mask despite President Biden’s executive order mandating masks be worn on public transportation.
“Senator Carper is zooming on a train during a hearing,” CSPAN’s Jeremy Art tweeted Wednesday of a Senate hearing on drinking water and wastewater infrastructure.
If I'm jumping around, it's because the train is jumping around. I'm not jittery,” Carper, a Democrat, said, adding that it was the first time joining a hearing in such a setting.
Some social media users pointed out that Biden signed an executive order when he took office mandating masks be worn on public transportation.
“Sen. Carper is breaking Biden's mask EO on domestic travel,” one user posted, accompanied by Biden’s executive order..
Others joked that he had better not be in the quiet car for the hearing, while some suggested it was reminiscent of Biden’s frequent use of Amtrak when he was a Delaware senator.
Biden signed the executive order requiring masks to be worn on public transportation on Jan 21.
“Accordingly, to save lives and allow all Americans, including the millions of people employed in the transportation industry, to travel and work safety, it is the policy of my administration to implement these public health measures consistent with CDC guidelines on public modes of transportation and at ports of entry to the United States,” the executive order reads.
Carper has been a supporter of weaning face masks, saying in November that they are not a political statement but needed for protection purposes.
“Wearing a mask isn’t a political statement,” he tweeted on Nov. 16. “Wearing a mask is about basic human decency and protecting those around us.”

What were they going to do about it?
Dump air and slam the train to a halt?
