The SMART Tire Company (STC) has released details of an airless bicycle tyre that is constructed with a casing made from nickel titanium alloy and developed in conjunction with Nasa.
The Metl bicycle tyre is said to be designed for road, gravel, mountain and ebike applications, and the technology the tyre is based on was first used by Nasa for the wheels on martian and lunar rovers.

I wonder what the mileage one can get on these?
What’s a tyre?
It’s a bicycle tire. How would one compute mileage?
I’ve always thought some kind of foam or air-filled beads would be a good solution.
Will the tires cost more than Gatorskins?
A British tire, but FreeRepublic does not allow changes that might make sense. Word for word and letter for letter.
Them’s the rules
Brit for “tire”.
They probably would, I suspect. If they work as advertised and will last the life of the bicycles, except for the hard-tail riders, you’re only going to need one set for as long as you can keep your bike.
My wagon when I was in pre-school had airless tires. They weren’t made out of expensive metals, however.
One night at the fire-pit, after several beers,
we had an interesting discussion about having
asphalt tires and rubber roads.
Yes and you’re adulthood butt remembers those tires.
Come to think of it, the rear tires on the tricycle were solid, as well. I don’t remember if the front could be inflated, or not.
I guess they won’t dry rot.
If they are out on the market and I get a new bike, I would consider buying them with the bike.
If the price is reasonable.
I saw this before, it looks cool, and they say it will last long time.
I am just wondering about traction, tire manufacturers spend a lot of money developing rubber compounds that are sticky, I don’t see how a metal mesh tire could have good traction.
Pardon me, but do you have a torch in your boot?
I thought the British spelled it ‘tyour’.
Actress Madeline Kahn sings : “I’m Tyred!”
Foam has some brittleness and would break down internally
