off and hurling slurs at him is not going to be productive.

You're right that is the obvious outcome of all this insane Russia Russia Russia crap we've been hearing for years now. Though in this case I think it's just Biden water on the brain. Calling the leader of another country is a killer is 'fighting words' in Diplomatic Speak. If you want to blast someone using Diplomatic words you say "the country's behavior is reprehensible" or something like that. You give them room to save face and avoid war. You don't single out the leader and call him a killer unless you are at war or want to be at war.
But indeed, it has always been a mistake to push Russia into China's arms. When you get past the surface Russia has a lot more in common with the west - and Europe seems to have no problem integrating Russian assets into their infrastructure (e.g. oil & gas pipelines) - than they do with the east. But they can only go south and east the way the West has walled them off. And so that's where they will go.
As for this gaffe, since it is plainly obvious that we don't want armed conflict with Russia, Russia has no choice but to recall their ambassador. That's the diplomatic move. But in the grand scheme Biden exposed a massive weakness in his administration and that is dangerous for us and the rest of the world. Like Don Corleone said "Never tell anybody outside the family what you are thinking".
