Gov. Tom Wolf announced Monday COVID-19 mitigation orders targeting the restaurant industry and other businesses in the state will be eased.
Effective at midnight April 4, capacity limits for restaurants as well as gyms and entertainment venues including casinos, theaters and malls will increase to 75% occupancy.
In addition, restaurants can resume bar service, allow alcohol service without purchase of food and once again sell alcohol after 11 p.m. Revisions also change maximum occupancy limits for indoor events to allow for 25% of maximum occupancy, regardless of venue size, while outdoor events are limited to 50% occupancy.
“Pennsylvanians have stepped up and done their part of help curb the spread of COVID-19,” Wolf said in a press statement.
The governor noted positive case counts and hospitalizations are declining, and the percent positivity rate is lower every week as more residents are getting vaccinated.
“It’s time to allow our restaurants, bars and other service businesses to get back to more normal operations,” he said.
The news comes as neighboring states including New Jersey, Maryland and New York have relaxed restrictions in their states. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced last week restaurants could open at full capacity with certain social distancing measures in place.
John Longstreet, president & CEO of the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association, said while the industry welcomes the news, they are disappointed the changes are not being implemented immediately, especially as other states take action immediately.
“We would like to see the Governor allow the hospitality industry the opportunity to come back to the business quicker, so that these businesses can survive this long period of disruption” Longstreet said.
The news comes just days ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, one of the busiest bar days for some restaurants and bars.
Wolf cautioned mask-wearing, social distancing and business adherence to all safety orders are still imperative.
“We’ve come so far and now is not the time to stop the safety measures we have in place to protect ourselves, our families and our communities,” he said. “Keep wearing a mask, social distancing, and, please, get vaccinated when it’s your turn.”

For all the kojaks in FR land, I'm not saying that the chi-com virus is not real and it has a death rate of less than one half of one percent, but is more deadly in old folks homes and is really deadly in hospices.
The chi-com virus also has a 100% death rate in all circumstances, when hospital administrators realize that uncle sugar will pay them more money by checking the covid box.
When a 96 year old, heart patient with stage 4 lung cancer, dies after falling down a flight of marble stairs and the covid box gets checked, I tend to get suspicious.
Sorry, but Covid only exists as a dichotomy here on FR.
