I have no idea why British and American historians can’t explain why Hitler & Stalin exterminated civilian domestic enemies, but ‘played ball’ with the Geneva Protocol & Hague Conventions during WW2.
My suspicion is the average Russian or German civilian had no power in a fascist or communist government. However great powers like the British, French(till they were conquered in 1940) and Americans had a number of political, economic, media, and military weapons at their disposal, to deal with Russia and Germany if they used wmd’s.
My position on Hitler and Stalin not using wmd’s, is they didn’t want to “open a can of worms” that could destroy their respective nations.

I hope you are correct about proxy wars, being the future and not showdowns with great powers. Many people think because of nuclear weapons it would be suicidal.

IIRC they bought up Tyson (maybe chicken group) and I think even Farmland.

Chinese want to run a WHO database, own a bunch of U.S. food ops and farmland (?), and apparently own a whole lot of U.S. politicians via the borrowed money.
How nice. They’re sharing information about US vulnerability with the whole world. Isn’t that special.
Also, we often forget that India, Japan, and maybe South Korea might have something to say about a sudden Chinese military offensive. And if it escalated, we have numerous well-armed allies, while China has a bunch of third-world s**holes that can’t do squat, and perhaps Iran. Russia?...maybe, but I’m not convinced that they would risk their own territory for China. In fact, Russia might be more likely to join in against China, if they’re smart. Jump in while everyone is pummeling the bully who lives next door before that bully can turn on you, which he inevitably will otherwise.
