Groups urge Gov. Wolf to open private events and weddings at 50% capacity

Frustrated by a lack of timeline for reopening, event professionals in Pennsylvania are urging Gov. Tom Wolf to ease COVID-19 mitigation restrictions for private events and weddings.

The Private Event Professionals of Pennsylvania along with the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association and the Philadelphia/South Jersey/Delaware chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events said they are advocating for the safe reopening of the wedding industry.

The groups want to see the event industry reopen at 50% capacity effective immediately with plans for how to reach 100% operating levels.

They launched LetPAMarryUs.com, a site designed to “save Pennsylvania weddings.” The site prompts users to email or send tweets to the governor in support of a safe reopening of the industry.

“How, after nearly of year of managing this pandemic, do we not have clear steps and metrics outlined to return businesses to full capacity?,” said Tim Sudall, president of NACE Philadelphia, South Jersey, and Delaware in a press statement. “It’s a failure of leadership to not be planning and communicating now for the eventual rollback of these mitigation orders.”

Recently, Wolf offered some relief when he relaxed rules for large gatherings, raising capacity to 15% for indoor events and 20% for outdoor, regardless of venue size. The administration also lifted out-of-state travel restrictions. Pennsylvania joins other states including New York, Ohio and Colorado where governors have announced more lenient rules for large gatherings.

While it was welcome news, those who plan events, an industry stretching from caterers to hotels and live music venues, say the increases barely make a dent. They say it’s difficult to plan, especially when events are scheduled six to 18 months in advance.

According to the groups, weddings represent more than 65% of the private event industry in Pennsylvania and impact dozens of other professions including food purveyors, caterers, hotels, photographers, florists and more.

“The private event industry has been decimated by the administration’s mitigation and the steps to reopening it have been too slow in coming,” said John Longstreet, PRLA president and CEO. “This segment of our industry is a vital component of our recovery and survival and the delay in communicating how it will reopen is putting it in peril.”

Any governor who is still holding his/her state locked down is not doing it for the virus.

I just love the pleading tone in this issue. But I guess when the Republican legislature is ineffectual, and the courts are in Tommie’s back pocket...

No kidding. Old people dying of COVID in nursing homes, small businesses crushed, election 'fortified'. . . mission accomplished.

As a non-business owner, it’s easy to say that I would do it. But I know that I’d be the politician’s worst nightmare if they intentionally destroyed MY investment. I’ve been sorely ashamed of fellow Americans’ fear and fecklessness in the face of tyranny.

Yup, the great “Northeast Compact” at work...in violation of Article One.

Tommie the Commie forgets that his state relates to three regions—NE PA/Philly to NYC, southcentral to MD/DC, and west of the Alleghenies to OH and the midwest.
