About 15 years ago, my younger brother, George, looked over my DVD collection of classic movies, including Gone with the Wind, The Searchers, and Animal House, and said, “You know, pretty soon you won’t need any of these. You’ll be able to download every one of them off the internet.” George was proved right technologically, but what he couldn’t predict was that cancel culture would target those films. No one could in 2006. Now I, like many other naïve movie lovers, regret having discarded my hard copies of the titles and am racing to replace them before they get erased.
I recalled that moment last Thursday when watching the premiere of Turner Classic Movies’ (TCM) ill-advised March series Reframed: Classic Films in the Rearview Mirror featuring Gone with the Wind (1939), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and Rope (1948). With the series, TCM hopes to continue its only raison d’être — presenting screen masterworks — yet protect itself from modern woke vampires bloated with fresh blood — Dr. Seuss’s and Mr. Potato Head’s. Other classics to be deconstructed for anti-wokeness include Woman of the Year (1942), Gunga Din (1939), and The Searchers (1956). TCM declares its intent in a ghastly website statement:
Many of the beloved classics that we enjoy on TCM have stood the test of time in several ways, nevertheless when viewed by contemporary standards, certain aspects of these films can be troubling and problematic. This month, we are looking at a collection of such movies and we’ll explore their history, consider their cultural context and discuss how these movies can be reframed so that future generations will keep their legacy alive.

Its time to hack into the closed circuit tv, and play blazing saddles on continuous loop at the airport
As long as they don’t touch Plan 9 From Outer Space, I’m ok.
The unshaven portly guy with the massive DVD collection adjacent to dozens of empty pizza boxes and Mountain Dew cans is laughing at us.
Yep. I saw the blacksplaining of GWTW. I was waiting for TCM to cave and now they have. So much for “art” and respecting the artist’s work.
Dipsh*t Stewart, who I think has some kind of PhD.... It's antebellum South (antebellum being Latin for before the war), not pre-bellum. If you're going lecture people at least get your words correct.
The Searchers has a very positive message of tolerance and acceptance.
Which when it gets down to it, is very anti-racist.
You are interested in the unknown... The mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here. At Free Republic.
Treasure your DVD collection folks.
ff
I DO treasure them, including GWTW and The Searchers, among others.
I have noticed in the last few weeks that EVERY damn commercial on TV has BLACK actors every damn one!!!
...or better yet, rip all your DVD’s into MP4 files and store them on a USB or NAS drives. Single 1tb drive can store 500+ movies in DVD resolution.
You can copy your movie files to your NAS drive, get Apple TV, download copy of Infuse and you have your own Netflix. You can also use PLEX or VLC on your PC, Roku, Amazon stick, etc.
The possibilities are endless.
Yes I have noticed....
yep, black, gay or both.
13% of the population, the same as 100 years ago basically.
Checked out The Rope (I love Hitchcock.) on IMBD. The rating is gone. (Movie from 1939 and no one has rated it????)
Animal House???
How can we ignore this inspirational speech? On the other hand this maybe why they are being canceled. LOL!
Would not dream of giving any of it away. I never would trust the powers that be to supply me with good culture. Have my vinyl collection too. Toted it all over tge northern hemisphere in and out of storage and through many orders and insults from well meaning moving helpers in my military friend community
Producers, advertisers and Entertainment industry people constantly deprive me. Why did tge get rid of Jackie curatolo on blue bloods? Why did Jack Bauer dump Kate Warner? SNL was successfully based on college boy humor why go off the rails?
Reading this, I just bought ‘Seven Brides’ on Amazon. Just in case I don’t have it. It is the best rendition of pioneer life, of male-female relations and of Hollywood blockbuster over the top spectacular American song and dance among the best in history.
Of course the idiotic entertainment industry would degrade it in favor of pushing the demonic on us including children.
Why trust them?
But watch 7 brides. Pay attention to the scene where Millie teaches them how to get out of their backwoods bachelor smelly loneliness and gets them to learn ballroom dancing. They love her. That’s interesting stuff.
