ADVERTISEMENT VP Harris casts tie-breaking vote for senators to start debate on Biden's $1.9tr COVID relief plan as one Republican senator forces reading of entire 628 page bill

Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate Thursday so lawmakers could start debate on President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill.

But, immediately, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin demanded the entire text of the 628-page bill be read aloud. A Senate clerk started the reading at 3:21 p.m. and it's expected to take 10 hours.

One hour into the reading, the clerks had gotten through 40 of 628 pages.

With the Senate evenly divided at 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, senators hung out on the Senate floor, chatting in small groups, as they waited for Harris to be rushed up Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to break the tie.

She arrived in a flurry and took her seat on the dais, announcing: 'The Senate being equally divided the vice president votes in the affirmative and the motion is agreed to.'

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tried to waive the reading of the bill, which usually all senators agree to in order to save time.

But any single senator can object to the waiver and Johnson did so.

'Reserving the right to object,' he said. Johnson and other Republican senators are trying to stall a final vote on the bill as part of their objection to the legislation. They are using legislative procedure to help them along.

'Is he allowed?,' Schumer demanded.

Harris ruled Johnson's objection was allowed and the clerk of the Senate would have to read the bill - all 628 pages.

'The objection is heard. The clerk will continue the reading,' she said.

I’m fully confident that the 1.9tr bill is fully compliant with Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers. //super-sarc

this is what we get for allowing the 2020 election to be stolen

including the two Georgia senate seats

we need to restore election integrity otherwise our votes are meaningless and we live in an unrepresentative dictatorship

What a shame that there is not even ONE American loving demon rat senator. Just one party change would shut Kammel Harris up.

How about a $1 trillion bill instead that gives $4,800?

You know, since we’re asking.

Since only 250 billion went out last year for $1,200 each.

Why all of the pork projects?

'Is he allowed?,' Schumer demanded.

Tick, Tock. How long before a Democrat Senator who is up for election in 2022 figures out that he/she is about to exceed his/her sell before date? Lying to the American people only works when they believe these lies. I don't think that the lies will survive until 2022.

It’s good to see that the Democrats closely consider the ramifications of their votes and don’t all just vote like stupid Lemmings.

Oh look! Joe Manchin voted with the Democrats (as he does time after time after time). Guy flat out lies to his voters and strings them along.

Senator Johnson should wait about 20-30 minutes after they leave and ask for a quorum call. When they leave again call for a quorum again and again.

“Just one party change would shut Kammel Harris up.”

No, because how many Republican senators voted to impeach Trump? There are at least three reliable (unreliable) turncoats. While the Democrats are a seeming monolithic block, many Republicans are just loud sphincters some of whom almost never vote the party line. Because they “cross the aisle and work with the other side for ‘bipartisan’ (retch) outcomes.”

Re: reading of the Bill: how many Senators were present to listen??

There should be a law that makes them listen. I am sure it is being read to an empty Senate. Most of them have NO idea what is in the bill.

They should force that for every damn law Congress tries to pass.

Can he do that? If so why does he not do this?

I don’t know. Maybe if calls for a quorum it ends the reading permanently. It probably has something to do with “Senate collegiality” which means only Democrats can do it.

all 50 senators who are republicans should object and ask for the bill to be read in its entirety.

they should also each submit 40 or 50 amendments—each 600 pages long and demand that they be read in their entirety.

The reality is the public could care less about the pork spending. This bill would have had no direct payments had it not been Trump who said $2k.

The public is going to be more unhappy their guvmint monies are being delayed. The bill was always repayment to bankrupt blue states with the Wuhan flu as cover.

Since this country is going broke, I’ll gladdy take my money now for instant gratification for prepping supplies.
