A new survey throws cold water on a popular pandemic storyline about a mass exodus from Silicon Valley.
Of the startups that moved, 12% relocated to Texas, 21% moved to New York, and 21% to other areas of California.
Notably, Austin, Texas was not the city with the most significant growth in startups: Denver, Colorado did, at 21% growth.
Despite the financial stressors of the pandemic, the survey found that venture capital investment in 2020 was up over 2019 by 4%. And, Telstra added "Dallas and Fort Worth that had VCs' attention, with a 66% boost in the number of VC investments made in 2020."
Insider reported in January that some companies moving from Austin has spurred changes in the Texas capital, and that the real estate market was "reeling from the new transplants."

“I will be driving to LA since I can do it in a few short hours(4)”
SF to LA in 4hrs is unusual.
Easy on a Sunday at 3am.
Left SF in 2016 after 20 years in the Financial District, have been shocked at the YouTube videos showing that area. Reminds me of how it was after 9/11 a ghost town. I guess Columbus Ave means North Beach is closed down.
It is so horrible.
Think of Tadich Grill and Cioppino
I went about 5 months and there was a line. No big deal, always is.
Then it struck me we were single file and all the way down to Front Street.
Then I saw people coming out with take out. Who does that?
So, I get out of line walk to the front and see a sign “Order ahead”.
Skip that! And Was so looking forward to Cioppino but, not putting that smell in my car, it will take days to get it out.
They are currently closed and will not reopen until Mayor London Breed decrees they can reopen at 50% capacity. That place will packed when they reopen, as will house of steaks.
All of Michael Minna’s is shut down.
Gary Danko.
Cliff House is out of business
Farrallon, Oh! Farallon! Loved that place - - Gone.
Mortons, Town Hall, etc
Damned near every place in the financial district and all those wonderful Irish Bars.
I don’t know how they every come back.
Financial District is literally Hollowed out. You can only park at Embarcadero 4. The others are close because ain’t no one there.
TransAmerican tower only guards and janitors there. We literally took the last three companies out of there last month and of the companies that are coming back it will be at 10-25% and staggered days like nurses do.
Yes, it was so sad knowing Farallon and Cliff House were closing, those places had ambiance, beautiful places AND great food, hard to find all three in one place.
Easy on a Sunday at 3am.
You've never been in a car with Vendome driving. He could do 4 hours with a stop at Harris Ranch or Pappy's 101 for a nice lunch.
It certainly is a ghost town, that is the exact truth.
Tadich Grill is closed for the duration, or so the sign on it says.
The Royal Exchange is just closed.
Trucks passing trucks is a game on I5 that slows everything down.
They take joy in it.
