Scientists in Iceland say ‘strong signs’ volcanic eruption is imminent (Update from today)

Scientists in Iceland have said there are now “strong signs” that a volcanic eruption may be under way following several days of near-constant seismic activity near Mount Keilir about 20 miles south of the capital, Reykjavik.

“We are not saying we have signs an eruption has begun,” Kristín Jónsdóttir of the Icelandic meteorological office told local media on Wednesday. “But this looks like the type of activity we expect in the run-up to an eruption.”

Víðir Reynisson of the island’s civil defence force told a mid-afternoon news conference it was “more likely than not” that an eruption – the first in the area since the 12th century – was about to begin, and could happen within the next few hours.

But Víðir said there was “no disaster going on and everyone can get on with their daily lives”. There was no immediate danger, he said, although people should avoid travelling to the area on the Reykjanes peninsula.

We should pass a law banning volcanoes.

Can’t wait for Joy Behar to utter that one.

Yikes. A lot of ash if the Iceland one erupts, too.

...and if you read past the short attention span clickbait headlines...

NOT predicting an explosive eruption, at all...

A fissure eruption, a crack splitting open, go about your business

I don’t know why, but from now until about the middle of summer seems to bring us the most active geology. The Fukushima EQ occurred in March, IIRC.

Lol

They hadn't planned on all the windmills in Texas freezing up. Some may pause for thought about the reliability of "green energy", after this.

And you know what cold weather does to batteries. The range on many EVs will be greatly reduced. So, turn off the heater unless you want to be stuck on the side of the road, waiting for a battery charge.

It also resulted in the rapid spread of Cholera.

A hell of a lot more than 300 grand died as a result of that one.

It was a VEI 7.

The 300,000 estimate was just for Ireland. Millions died in other countries. It is believed to be responsible also for the cholera epidemic which began in the Bay of Bengal area, spread to Russia and to Western Europe and then to the US. President James K. Polk died in 1849 of cholera, possibly of a strain that went back to the cholera epidemic spawned by the eruption of Tambora.
