Thousands of students reported 'missing' from school systems nationwide amid COVID-19 pandemic
ABC News / Disney ^ | March 2, 2021 | By Arielle Mitropoulos

States around the country are reporting a significant decline in the number of students enrolled in public school because of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving experts and educators concerned about the trend, and its potential long-term consequences.

A notable number of students seem to have simply fallen off the grid, not showing up for online or in-person instruction, their whereabouts unknown by school officials.

Given the chaos caused by the pandemic, and the lack of data, it is difficult to truly determine the exact magnitude of the problem, which seems to be disproportionately affecting already vulnerable student populations – among them homeless students, children with disabilities, children of immigrants, children in foster care and children of color.

A recent study by Bellwether Education Partners, a non-profit that focuses on underserved communities, estimates that approximately 3 million of the “most educationally marginalized students in the country” may have been missing from school since March 2020, when the pandemic forced school closures. The group said it arrived at the number by calculating a “likely percentage of at-risk groups not in school, based on media reports and available data.”

ABC News contacted officials from the departments of education in all 50 states, and found that the problem appears to be nationwide.

Although some states reported that they do not track such information, many others said that they have seen a significant decline in their enrollment numbers, and still others have reported they have thousands of missing students.

“... leaving experts and educators concerned about the trend, and its potential long-term consequences. “

If we can’t find them, we can’t indoctrinate them, and that is tragic.

How do they know kids are missing and then claim there’s a “lack of data” on those very kids?

People can abandon public schools all day long, what I want to know is, when will they stop receiving public tax dollars? Never.

Peoples use of care takers, child tenders have changed along with

No buses running, no HVAC bills for essentially closed schools, little active maintenance, no cafeteria staff, hall monitors, teaching assistants, sports transportation costs. Where is my school tax rebate?

If I was younger and experiencing this commie bullchit with my kids going to school,I would home school them. As far as these schools being closed I think it’s a good thing the kids minds aren’t being indoctrinated into the commie way. Maybe a fair amount of families will see that it’s better to protect our precious youth from the evil tactics of these Marxist bastards. Or should I say Marxist/commie pigs.

From what I have seen, some parents and/or students, have had continuous difficulty getting and/or maintaining computer connections with some school system’s remote servers.

Because the school system computer tech people and/or teachers DO NOT KNOW what their (the school system’s) technical “issues” (PROBLEMS) are.

... enrolled in public school”
The key word.
I’ve never had children but I’m pretty sure if I did, they wouldn’t be educated by the government.

Mass Truancy. No enforceable way to make the kids turn on the Zoom function, and no way to proctor them as they do doze off or zone out.

Some folks imagine that kids are sufficiently self-actualized to WANT to sit through several hours of class a day. Well, news flash, there is a certain minority, perhaps 30% or more, that have just such personal animus toward ALL forms of learning.

“Readin’, writin” and ‘rithmetic, taught to the tune of a hickory stick”. Being a teacher is a huge challenge in the best of circumstances.

Not necessarily. These will be the lazy, worthless dredges of society the Democrats will whip up every election cycle. You know, how they have to vote Demonrat so they can get a bit of what all the hard working students achieve.

I know with all the hell-raising from the parents about kids needing to go to school, about half of FWISD chose to stay home anyway.

Exactly, and who is this group “Bellweather” anyway? They could just be another Marxist mob putting out disinformation in order to justify more left wing legislation.

My grand niece is in a hybrid system. 2 cohorts. Every other week 2 day in 3 virtual. To be honest, she doesn’t want to go back to school. Most of the other kid her age (9) in the neighborhood feel the same way. Going to be lots of issues when things get back to normal.

Uh . . . how about some journalistic integrity. The "pandemic" didn't force anything. The shutdowns were ALL brought on by liberal politicians.

Prove me wrong.

The answer is school choice: let the real estate dollars follow the children to the school (public, private, alternative, home school) of their choice.

And when the kid is enrolled in public or charter school, then the parents pay school tax.

No school tax for people without children, people with children over 18, homeschoolers, and people with children in private school.

Have authorities checked the student’s homes?

Or is that racist?
