With the Northern Michigan Wolf population rising I think Wisconsin is going to need a wall.

Wisconsin DNR has not been very honest with how many wolves are out there. Several stories, one about the hunter who had his guns taken away after being stalked and defending himself. He finally got them back. Another about a grandfather and grandson who again were stalked in the same area a short time later. Neighbors catch them on camera regularly. But DNR claims they are few and far between. Also big cats. Many videos of them roaming the bluffs around Baraboo.

Gee, I wonder if this is why our great-great grandparents put a bounty on them, and wiped them out?

He comments that DNR wants to put tracking collars on the wolves. I guess that is to limit S,S,S action?

Yeah, how about in Boston Common, Harvard Yard, Central Park, Santa Barbara, the Presidio of San Francisco and Beverly Hills?

During the Pleistocene, big cats wiped out the wolf population.

The best thing to do is shoot, shovel and shut up.

There were Dire Wolves in the Americas. They were probably wiped out, along with the other megafauna, by human immigrants from Siberia.

There were Dire Wolves in the Americas. They were probably wiped out, along with the other megafauna, by human immigrants from Siberia.

They were wiped out around 10800 BC with the comet strike centered just north of the Great Lakes region, with the mile diameter impacts occurring mainly on the ice cap, strikes lasting over a century causing a continent-wide fire storm with ice shard descending from the stratosphere after being thrown up by the ice impacts - see the Carolina Bays and the Nebraska Rainwater Basins for remnants.

Humans had nothing to do with it, and were equally wiped out - see disappearance of the Clovis people

Any non-pdf references/links to this early decimation of North American canids?

Not canids specifically, but to all NAm mega-fauna and Clovis peoples. The most comprehensive not technical reference is Graham Hancock’s America Before. If you want others more technical, search for Carolina Bays and Nebraska Rainwater basins creations; there are many others but those are the first that come to mind.

Every living mega-fauna were wiped out world wide, only relatively small animals like bears and elk survived. There was another interesting and just now being explored effect: Oxygen depletion.

Back in the day when Dinos roamed the world, one of the reasons why they were able to grow so large was the very high O2 content in the atmosphere, but the numerous large asteroid strikes and the lava flows from the Deccan and Siberian traps (lasting millions of years) burned off huge quantities of O2.

Similarly, the megafauna may have depended on a high O2 content for their size. With the 100 year long firestorms across North America, the O2 percent may have lowered below that which is necessary to support large land animals. All of this is kinda the cutting edge to explain why there were such large animals in the past. Its either higher O2 or lower gravity, so its easier to deal with the former.

Wolves can get nasty when hungry - and will kill and eat the weakest member of the pack. I’ve seen direct evidence of that while deer hunting on Admiralty Island in SE Alaska.

Next to humans wolves are one of the most cunning, intelligent and aggressive animals on Earth. They learn quickly. In a pack against one human, even an armed human it can be a tough fight, especially if you’re out in the open. If there is a treeline nearby they’ll hide out, bide their time and then track you down, cut off your advance or retreat and then move in.

If things aren’t in their favor they’ll wait until they are.
